It’s surprising to think Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been out for a year already. Although Ubisoft has stopped actively updating the game to concentrate on future titles, its significance is clear, as noted by art director Thierry Dansereau.
In a recent interview with IGN, the game’s creator discussed how upcoming updates will significantly impact future releases. He highlighted the new Atmos weather system and the addition of ray-traced global illumination, explaining that both features dramatically enhance the game’s depiction of ancient Japan.
We successfully launched the game, and I’m really proud of the team! Developing Assassin’s Creed is a huge undertaking, involving so many people, so it truly takes a collective effort. I’ve talked to developers at other studios like DICE, and they all agree that just getting a game released feels like a small miracle.
We’ve made significant improvements to several key areas of the game, including parkour, stealth, and combat. These advancements, and the underlying technology we developed, will likely influence and be used in future Assassin’s Creed games. We’ve laid the groundwork for a lot of what’s to come.
The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is likely to greatly benefit from what Ubisoft learned while developing Shadows – its creative director describes it as a uniquely dark and story-focused game. But that’s not all; a remake of the popular Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is also in the works and could be revealed later this year, potentially releasing in 2027.
