Great news for Assassin’s Creed fans! Netflix has officially started production on the live-action series, filming now in Italy. Get ready to jump back into the Animus!
The series has begun filming at the famous Cinecittà Studios in Rome, and the streaming service has revealed the specific time period it will cover.
The game series takes place over a vast period of more than 2,000 years, putting players in the middle of a secret war between the Assassins and the Knights Templar. It explores different time periods, from ancient history through the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and beyond – including colonial, industrial, and revolutionary times.
The newest version of the series will be set in 64 AD, during the height of the Roman Empire. Netflix describes it as a completely new story, not based directly on any of the previous games.
The series has visited Renaissance Italy before in the popular games Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations. These titles followed Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a member of the Italian Brotherhood of Assassins, as he fought against the Templar Order and the powerful, corrupt Borgia family.

This new version, coming after the 2016 movie with Michael Fassbender, will be set much earlier in history. It will take place almost 1,500 years before the story of Brotherhood, during a crucial period in ancient Rome.
In 64 AD, Rome suffered a massive fire that lasted six days and destroyed about 70% of the city. This happened while the cruel Emperor Nero was in power; he was the fifth Roman emperor.
This terrible event marked a crucial moment in the city’s history. It led to the first widespread persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire, as Emperor Nero tried to avoid being blamed for it.
Details about the show’s story are currently being kept secret. However, it’s been described as a fast-paced thriller about a hidden conflict between two groups: one trying to control humanity’s future, and the other fighting to protect our freedom.
After announcing Toby Wallace (from Euphoria) as a main cast member, Netflix has now confirmed that Claes Bang, Lola Petticrew, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, and Nabhaan Rizwan will also be series regulars.
Noomi Rapace, Ramzy Bedia, Sean Harris, and Corrado Invernizzi will also be appearing throughout the series in supporting roles, joining Sandra Guldberg-Kampp, Youssef Kerkour, Mirren Mack, and Louis McCartney.
The upcoming series is being led by Roberto Patino and David Wiener, both known for their work on Westworld and Halo. This marks the first live-action show resulting from the collaboration between Netflix and Ubisoft. Originally revealed in 2021, Netflix officially greenlit the project in July 2025.
I’ve been a huge Assassin’s Creed fan ever since the first game came out in 2007, and working on this show is just incredible. Every day, my partner and I are amazed by all the exciting possibilities this universe offers us. It’s a really humbling experience.
With the incredible support of Ubisoft and Netflix, we’re dedicated to making something truly special for fans worldwide.
Fans had better start practising their leap of faith in the meantime!
