It’s no surprise some fighting game fans prefer older titles these days. Newer games often launch with disappointing updates and rely heavily on ongoing, live service models. Games like Killer Instinct (2013) and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 might not be as popular as Street Fighter 6 or Mortal Kombat 1, but they tend to have incredibly dedicated communities. When you add the initial excitement players felt with continued content updates years later, you can build a thriving community that avoids many of the problems common in fighting games.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Olsen moved to Los Angeles at 21 to become a screenwriter. He graduated from the American Film Institute in 1987 and quickly landed his first screenwriting job in 1988 with the action film Red Scorpion (and its sequel). He went on to work on a variety of projects, including the thriller Black Ice, the comedy Cop & 1/2 starring Burt Reynolds, the sci-fi action film Final Round, and the animated movie Thumbelina. His big break came with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. Released at the peak of the Power Rangers TV show’s popularity, the film was a box office success, earning over $66 million on a $15 million budget.

The final installment in the Mononoke movie trilogy, Mononoke: The Movie – Chapter 3: The Serpent God, will be released in Japan on May 29th. This concludes the story that began with the “Medicine Seller” in a 12-episode anime series produced by Toei Animation in 2007. The franchise was revived with the first film, Mononoke The Movie: Phantom in the Rain, followed by Mononoke The Movie: The Ashes of Rage the following year. Released in 1997, Starship Troopers is a sci-fi action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier. The film, based on Robert A. Heinlein’s novel, takes place in the 23rd century and follows young Johnny Rico as he and his fellow soldiers fight an alien race called the Arachnids in a war for Earth’s government, the United Citizen Federation. While the movie, starring Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Muldoon, and Michael Ironside, wasn’t a big success when it came out and received negative reviews, it’s now being recognized as a brilliant satire. Initially, some believed it promoted fascist ideas, but now viewers see it as a clever commentary on those very ideas.

During the PlayStation 3 era, Sony took inspiration from Microsoft’s approach to player achievement systems, launching Trophies with the game Super Stardust HD. Initially a feature players could choose to use, Trophies quickly became required for many games and are now a core element of the PlayStation experience.

According to Rob Edwards, CEO of Perp Games, The Relic: First Guardian – the debut game from Project Cloud Games – will be launching in the summer of 2026 instead of May 26th. This delay is to allow the development team more time to refine the game after years of dedicated work.
