Anime is well-known for its action and romantic comedies, but horror doesn’t quite reach the same level of popularity. There aren’t as many horror anime shows and movies compared to other genres, though one series consistently delivers the chills. While it’s not based on the work of horror manga master Junji Ito, it’s still a great addition to the spooky side of anime. Prepare to be scared by Mononoke next month!
The final installment in the Mononoke movie trilogy, Mononoke: The Movie – Chapter 3: The Serpent God, will be released in Japan on May 29th. This concludes the story that began with the “Medicine Seller” in a 12-episode anime series produced by Toei Animation in 2007. The franchise was revived with the first film, Mononoke The Movie: Phantom in the Rain, followed by Mononoke The Movie: The Ashes of Rage the following year. Staying true to the series’ distinctive animation style, this third film continues the creepy and atmospheric horror story – you can check out a preview in the trailer below.
Mononoke’s Serpent God is Slithering to Theaters
A new trailer and synopsis have been released for the latest installment in the horror series. The story picks up after two frightening encounters – a fierce fight between a mysterious medicine seller and a dangerous creature, and a battle against a fiery rat – which briefly brought peace to the Ooku, the women’s quarters of Edo Castle. Though things seemed calm, the medicine seller felt a lingering threat. Sadly, the joy of the Emperor’s long-awaited son’s birth was quickly overshadowed by the death of his wife, despite everyone’s hopes for her recovery.
Sachiko had hoped having a child would deepen her shallow marriage with the Emperor, but instead, she becomes entangled in a dangerous plot that could destroy the Ooku itself. The resulting heartbreak, unfulfilled longing, and bottled-up fury begin to manifest as vengeful ghosts. Mizorogi Hokuto, a priest serving the deity worshipped within the Ooku, observes these events with a serious and concerned expression.
Beyond simply adding another horror anime to the mix, Mononoke stands out visually from everything else. Its unique art style, resembling a watercolor painting rather than typical animation, creates a truly distinctive experience. While it might not be a conventional horror series, it delivers genuine scares. If you’re interested in checking it out, the first series and movie are currently available on Netflix.
