The movie depicts a future where society is divided based on genetic makeup. Ethan Hawke plays Vincent Freeman, a man born naturally who assumes the identity of a genetically engineered, disabled individual to pursue his goal of traveling to space. While Gattaca wasn’t a box office success initially – it earned just $12 million with a $36 million budget – it’s now considered a sci-fi classic, boasting impressive scores of 82% from critics and 87% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
