Over sixteen years after the first Avatar movie came out, James Cameron’s sci-fi series is still a huge success in theaters. The newest film premiered on December 19th and could potentially earn more money than the previous one.
The new film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, opened to a strong $345 million worldwide. While successful, this was a bit lower than the $435 million debut of Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. However, early predictions suggest Avatar 3 will perform even better, potentially having a smaller drop in sales over the Christmas period than its predecessor.
The latest Avatar film cost $400 million to make, but it hasn’t earned that much yet, bringing in $347.3 million so far, according to The Numbers. The previous Avatar movie, Avatar: The Way of Water, also had a $400 million budget, but it became the highest-grossing film of 2022, earning $2.32 billion worldwide.
The Avatar movies have earned more money at the box office than any other film series, and they tend to stay in theaters for a long time. The new movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, might also have a long run in cinemas.
Experts predict that Avatar: Fire and Ash will earn between $75 and $80 million during the four-day holiday, and $55 to $65 million over the standard weekend. This represents a decrease of 30% to 40% from its opening weekend—a smaller drop than the 52% decline experienced by Avatar: The Way of Water after its initial $134 million domestic earnings.
The first two Avatar movies both earned over $2 billion, and the new film, Fire and Ash, is predicted to reach that same level of success, staying popular in the US for months to come.
The Christmas Week Has a Wide Array of Genres
While Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to be the biggest hit this week, there are several other great movies coming out. A24’s highly praised drama Marty Supreme features Timothée Chalamet in another Christmas release, following his 2024 film A Complete Unknown, a biopic about Bob Dylan. Both movies are generating Oscar buzz.
