Fans are working hard to help James Cameron’s Avatar 3: Fire and Ash succeed at the box office, hoping it will reach $2 billion in earnings. The film hasn’t performed as well as previous Avatar movies, so dedicated viewers are encouraging others to see it in theaters again to ensure the franchise continues.
Avatar 3 fans ask people to rewatch Fire and Ash in theaters
Avatar 3: Fire and Ash has earned $1.32 billion globally, with $368 million coming from the US and $955 million from international markets (according to Box Office Mojo). While it’s one of the top 25 highest-grossing movies ever, it hasn’t reached the levels of the first Avatar ($2.92 billion) or Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion). With its time in theaters winding down and ticket sales decreasing, there’s some uncertainty about how well future films in the series will perform financially.
Even so, Fire and Ash has been a financial success according to industry benchmarks. Director James Cameron jokingly stated the film earned a huge amount of money, but they needed to earn twice that amount just to break even. This highlights the incredibly high costs of producing and promoting the movie, which are estimated to be over $350 million.
After the film’s earnings came in lower than expected, passionate fans started encouraging others to watch “Fire and Ash” more than once. A popular post on Reddit pleaded with “Avatar” fans to support the film – saying Pandora needs their help – and suggested seeing it at least twice, even bringing along friends and family. The post stressed that every ticket purchase makes a difference and contributes to the film’s overall success.
The movie is so popular that some fans are buying tickets for others who haven’t had a chance to see it. One fan shared that they’ve already seen it four times and are planning to go again for a fifth viewing.
But not everyone felt the same way. One viewer commented, “Honestly, a huge media franchise like this doesn’t need our support.” Another simply said, “They’ve really lost touch with what made it good.”
The next two Avatar movies, currently planned for release on December 21, 2029, and December 19, 2031, haven’t officially started production yet. Director James Cameron has suggested that whether or not they’re made will depend on how well the third film, Avatar: The Seed Bearer (also known as Avatar 3 or Fire and Ash), performs.
