Looking forward to the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash towards the end of this year, visionary director James Cameron has started planning for Avatar 4 and 5. Should everything proceed as planned, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker intends to continue his involvement throughout the entirety of the Avatar series.
What are James Cameron’s plans for the future of Avatar?
In an interview with Empire, James Cameron revealed his plans to helm both the fourth and fifth films in the Avatar series.
“I mean, there’s no reason not to,” Cameron said. “I’m healthy. I’m good to go.”
Next month, Cameron will celebrate his 71st birthday. If he takes on directing the fifth and final installment of the Avatar series, he’ll be 77 years old. Given that these films demand all his focus and dedication, Cameron acknowledges that if he can’t fully commit physically and mentally to more Avatar movies, he may decide to let another director take over.
Cameron hinted at the possibility of passing on the franchise to another director, stating, “I’m not dismissing it as an option.” He further explained that he may not have the stamina to tackle the intense workload required for another six to seven years. In simpler terms, he might not be up for the task anymore.
Cameron used his collaboration with Robert Rodriguez on Alita: Battle Angel as an example to demonstrate his openness to allowing others to direct his screenplays. However, until Cameron hands over control to a new director, he plans to continue directing Avatar 4 and 5 himself.
The third Avatar film, having recently unveiled its initial trailer, is set to be released in cinemas before the year ends. In this upcoming movie, we will encounter two fresh Na’vi groups: the Wind Traders and the Ash People. The Ash People, known for their aggressive nature, are headed by Varang (Oona Chaplin). This fierce clan, led by Varang, is expected to engage in conflict with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their kin.
Cameron directed Avatar 3 from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
The movie titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash” will be distributed by 20th Century Studios on December 19, 2025. You can expect the fourth Avatar film to come out on December 21, 2029, followed by the fifth one on December 19, 2031.
