The 53rd Saturn Awards took place on March 8th, and Avatar: The Way of Water was the big winner, earning awards for Best Science Fiction Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriting, Best Young Performer (Jack Champion), and Best Visual/Special Effects. During the ceremony, James Cameron also discussed the possibility of a fourth Avatar movie, according to ScreenRant. His comments suggest a fourth film is increasingly likely, despite the fact that The Way of Water didn’t reach the same financial success as the first two Avatar movies.
He also hinted at what to expect in the next movie, suggesting they’ll focus on a popular aspect of Fire and Ash – specifically, the character of Varang, played by Oona Chaplin – in the fourth installment.
What Did Cameron Have to Say About a Fourth Avatar Film?

I’ve heard Cameron talk about having finished the scripts for Avatar 4 and 5, but he’s also said that sequels always change based on how the previous movie is received. It just makes sense – if a film doesn’t make money, the next one is likely cancelled. And if audiences really love or hate a character, that affects how much they’re in the next film. A perfect example is Jar Jar Binks; he was a big deal in The Phantom Menace, but then only showed up briefly in the rest of the Star Wars prequels because people didn’t like him.
This pattern holds true for Avatar, just like Star Wars or any other long-running series. When asked if fan reactions to Avatar: Fire and Ash would influence the next film, James Cameron admitted the third movie isn’t guaranteed, but is probable. He noted that the character Varang might need further development. She blended into the large cast, and Cameron suggested they might want to give her a more significant role in the future.
Chaplin’s character, Varang, was the highlight of Fire and Ash. Many would argue she’s a more compelling villain than Stephen Lang’s Miles Quaritch. With Quaritch seemingly gone for good, Varang is perfectly positioned to become the main antagonist in future installments.
Cameron was pleased with the audience’s positive reaction to Chaplin’s character. Regarding potential script revisions to give her a larger role, Cameron explained that it’s a good problem to have when something resonates with viewers. She used the example of Payakan from The Way of Water, who was the most popular character in that film. While she didn’t share that information with the actors, it led to Payakan being included in Fire and Ash. Cameron noted that filmmaking is an evolving process and lessons are learned along the way.
Payakan the whale – or tulkun, as they’re known in the Avatar world – was a memorable part of Avatar: The Way of Water, but Varang played an even bigger role in Avatar: Fire and Ash. It’s great to think the next movie might explore Varang’s story even more.
