The new movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is expected to be a massive success in theaters around the world. As the third film in James Cameron’s popular sci-fi series, it follows two previous installments that both earned over $2 billion globally – making them among the highest-grossing movies ever made.
The movie Avatar: Fire and Ash came out on December 19th and earned $89.2 million in its first weekend in the US, making it the second-highest opening weekend of any film in the Avatar series (when not accounting for inflation).
According to Variety, Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to reach a worldwide total of $760 million by the end of its second weekend in theaters. Of that amount, $217.7 million has come from North American ticket sales, and $542.3 million from international sales. This achievement makes it only the sixth film released in 2025 to earn over $750 million globally.
As a huge movie fan, I’m keeping a close eye on the box office, and it’s amazing to see how well Avatar: Fire and Ash is doing! Coming out before the Christmas weekend in 2025, it was already the 11th highest-grossing film of the year. But now, it’s really taking off and quickly moving past five of the films that were previously in the Top 10, landing at number six!
The films Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle ($714.5 million), How to Train Your Dragon ($636.3 million), F1 The Movie ($631.6 million), Superman ($616.8 million), and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning ($598.8 million) are currently performing well. However, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has now fallen out of the Top 10, dropping to number 11.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really curious to see just how well Avatar: Fire and Ash will do throughout 2025 – will it become a real box office hit? Here’s a look at the current Top 5 movies of the year so far:
| # | Title | Worldwide Box Office |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ne Zha 2 | $2.15 billion |
| 2 | Zootopia 2 | $1.42 billion |
| 3 | Lilo & Stitch | $1.038 billion |
| 4 | A Minecraft Movie | $958.1 million |
| 5 | Jurassic World Rebirth | $869.1 million |
More to come…
