Avatar 3 star Sam Worthington isn’t sure if Avatar 4 will end up happening.
Later this month, 20th Century Studios will release the next installment in the Avatar series, titled Avatar: Fire and Ash. James Cameron directs the sequel, continuing the story of Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (played by Zoe Saldaña) after the events of the 2009 original and 2023’s Avatar: The Way of Water.
James Cameron had previously discussed making sequels to Avatar, specifically parts four and five, but he recently stated he’s no longer certain those films will actually be made.
Cameron is confident the new Avatar movie will be profitable, but he’s more concerned with whether it will earn enough to warrant making future installments. He explained on The Town podcast that he’s been developing the world of Avatar for three decades, starting with the initial writing in 1995. After an initial wave of interest, the project was dismissed as unrealistic and put on hold for ten years. Development resumed in 2005, and Cameron is open to the possibility that this film could be the last one, saying, “If this is where it ends, cool.”
What did Sam Worthington say about Avatar 4?
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sam Worthington discussed Avatar 4. He believes director James Cameron is right to focus on making a film that resonates with audiences, admitting it’s stressful to release a movie into the world. He hinted that the story will follow Jake Sully’s declaration from Avatar 2 – that they’ve reached the point of making a final stand. Worthington sees the upcoming film as the ultimate battle and the conclusion of a long-planned story, although he acknowledges Cameron has ideas for continuing the Avatar saga. He explained that Cameron originally envisioned Avatar 2 and 3 as one large film and wants to see how audiences respond before moving forward.
Stephen Lang, known for his role as Miles Quaritch in the Avatar movies, has hinted at future installments. He said James Cameron is very committed to continuing the story and exploring the characters’ families, and while there might be gaps between films, they’ll definitely return, echoing a famous line, ‘We’ll be back.’
Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives on December 19, 2025.
