Avatar: Fire & Ash Box Office Passes 2 of the Best Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time

James Cameron’s latest film, Avatar: Fire & Ash, is a huge success, continuing to lead at the box office over the Christmas weekend with $64 million in earnings—and another $88 million since last Thursday. This pushes Fire & Ash ahead of other popular sci-fi films like Interstellar and Dune: Part Two. The original Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water still claim the top two spots as the highest-grossing sci-fi movies ever. Given its strong performance and the fact that previous Avatar films stayed at the top for seven weekends each, Fire & Ash is likely to remain a box office hit well into 2026 – a well-earned achievement considering how much fans are enjoying it.

James Cameron seems willing to move on from the Avatar franchise if the latest film doesn’t do well at the box office. He told The Town that he’s been developing the idea for around 30 years, originally writing it in 1995. After initial disinterest and being told it was unrealistic, he put the project on hold for a decade before revisiting it seriously in 2005. He admits he’s okay with ending the series here, but currently, the film is profitable and the ideas for a fourth movie are too promising to ignore.

Could We See Fire & Ash Pass $1B?

The new Avatar movie is almost certain to be a big hit. Avatar films continue to earn money for a long time after their theatrical release, and they often do better internationally than in the US. For example, in China, the latest film, Fire & Ash, earned $57.6 million, slightly more than The Way of Water did on its opening weekend. Plus, Fire & Ash reached $500 million worldwide by Christmas, showing it’s maintaining a strong momentum.

Currently, it looks like only a handful of upcoming movies have a chance of surpassing Avatar 3 at the box office, and most of those won’t be released until February. Potential challengers include 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Return to Silent Hill, and Scream 7. Director James Cameron has said that Fire & Ash needs to be a major financial success for Disney to approve the next two films in the series. Although some footage for the next installment—including scenes with Michelle Yeoh—has already been filmed and a release date is set for December 21, 2029, Fire & Ash is already performing well enough that it’s unlikely to be considered a failure for the studio.
