Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Avatar: Fire & Ash
The latest Avatar film, Fire & Ash, successfully demonstrates why bringing back Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) was a good decision. After his death in the first Avatar and subsequent return as a recombinant avatar in The Way of Water, this new installment confirms that he’s a compelling and valuable character for the series.
After their epic battle in The Way of Water (2023), Fire & Ash cleverly portrays Quaritch as a twisted version of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington). This makes you wonder if bringing Quaritch back in future Avatar movies will still be a good idea.
How Col. Quaritch Earned His Return In Avatar: Fire & Ash
After surviving the events of The Way of Water – and already being brought back to life in the first Avatar film – Quaritch’s return could have felt predictable and uninspired. However, Fire & Ash justifies his reappearance, giving the RDA colonel a surprising amount of depth and complexity we haven’t seen before.
In Fire & Ash, Quaritch undergoes a significant change by forming an alliance between the RDA and the Ash People, a Na’vi clan known for their aggression and rejection of the Eywa religion. This shift is also fueled by a romantic relationship between Quaritch and Varang, the tsahik (spiritual leader) of the Ash People, played by Oona Chaplin.
Over time, Quaritch begins to resemble the Na’vi more than a human, becoming increasingly immersed in the culture of the Ash People. This transformation mirrors Jake Sully’s initial experience on Pandora, but from a much more sinister perspective.
By the end of the movie, Quaritch shows a change of heart and decides not to fight the Sully family, especially after teaming up with Jake to rescue Spider – his human son who Jake adopted. He then jumps off a cliff, and it’s unclear if he survived.
In the new film, Jake and Quaritch develop an unexpected connection through their mutual concern for Spider. This bond leads Jake to constantly push Quaritch to view Pandora in a different light. Although Quaritch isn’t fully reformed by the end of Fire & Ash, he’s left deeply conflicted and facing a critical turning point.
The fact that it’s unclear what happened to him was intentional, leaving viewers to question whether Colonel Miles Quaritch could reappear in future Avatar movies.
Should Quaritch Return (Again) In Avatar 4?
If Colonel Quaritch comes back in Avatar 4, he probably won’t be a simple bad guy. The recent film showed he’s a much more compelling character when his motivations aren’t so clear-cut.
It would be interesting to see a fragile, uneasy alliance form between the Sully family and their enemies, not out of friendship, but because they both face a greater danger – especially if the RDA decides to abandon Colonel Quaritch. There’s also a lot of story potential in exploring the bond between Quaritch and Spider; if they genuinely tried to connect, it could lead to Quaritch becoming a more sympathetic character.
With Avatar: Fire & Ash, the character Quaritch has proven he deserves to return in future installments, making a potential Avatar 4 and 5 even more exciting.
James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire & Ash is now playing in theaters.
