Okay, so an Avatar: The Last Airbender fighting game with all the major characters? Honestly, it sounded amazing, but also kinda crazy. I mean, how do you balance someone like Katara, who’s a powerful waterbender, against, like, three different Avatars? And poor Sokka? He doesn’t even have bending! But thankfully, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game actually figured out a way to make it work, and it’s pretty cool how they did it.
At Summer Game Fest this year, PM Studios showcased Avatar Legends. I got to play a 30-minute match against a coworker, and it was really fun! We tried out all eight starting characters – Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, Azula, Kyoshi, and Korra – and they all felt pretty balanced. Some were easier to control and had more complex moves, but overall, anyone could win with a little skill. The developers plan to add even more playable characters in the future.

I especially enjoyed playing as Korra. Unlike Aang who focused mainly on airbending, Korra used all four elements in her attacks – I really liked that versatility. Kyoshi played similarly. It was also surprising how strong Sokka could be, acting like a powerful, defensive character. My coworker preferred Toph, and she’s right to; mastering Toph can make you incredibly difficult to defeat, almost like achieving the same level of skill as players known for characters like MenaRD or Blanka.
You don’t need to be familiar with fighting game culture to have fun with this game! It’s made for both long-time fans and people new to the genre. The controls are simple: three attack buttons – light, medium, and heavy – plus a special button that activates “Flow State.” This Flow State is what sets Avatar Legends apart. You can use it to dash, throw opponents, or even break free from tough combos. It’s essential for both building your own attacks and defending against others.

The game feels great to play – we didn’t notice any control problems – and visually, it’s like watching the anime come to life. The 2D animation perfectly captures the style of both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, and the character designs are incredibly faithful to the original series. A detail I especially love – something that’s often been an issue in games like Fortnite – is the accurate character sizes. Characters like Toph are appropriately shorter, while Kyoshi is much taller, which adds a lot of personality. I’m excited to see the finished version of Avatar Legends when it releases next month.
