Avatar: The Last Airbender Star Calls Paramount “Evil” For Treatment of the Franchise

The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is expanding thanks to Paramount, who are creating new shows and content. A sequel series, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, will stream on Paramount+ this October, showing what happened to Aang and his friends as adults. After that, another sequel series called Avatar: Seven Havens will introduce a brand new Avatar set after the events of The Legend of Korra. However, not everyone is happy with these plans – one of the original voice actors has publicly shared their disappointment with how the franchise is being handled.

Following the cancellation of the planned Avatar: The Last Airbender roleplaying game, voice actor Mako Iwamatsu (known as Uncle Iroh) shared a blunt opinion on social media. He explained that, at 65, he feels comfortable speaking frankly, and having worked in the entertainment industry for three decades, he’s seen firsthand how studio executives often lack creative vision. However, he believes the current leadership at Paramount is actively harmful, stating they have no appreciation for the themes of grace, redemption, and anti-fascism that are central to Avatar. He feels they simply don’t understand or value the franchise. While Iroh’s role in the upcoming Avatar sequel hasn’t been confirmed, he’s been a beloved character throughout the series, even appearing in The Legend of Korra.

Iroh’s Original Plea

Greg Baldwin, a voice actor on Avatar: The Last Airbender, expressed his disappointment when early versions of the show appeared online before its official release on Paramount+. He strongly stated that watching the leaked content was disrespectful to everyone who worked on the series. Baldwin explained that by watching the leak, fans were not only disrespecting the story itself, but also the creators, artists, writers, musicians, actors – including Mako and even his own character, Iroh.

The upcoming live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender features a brand new cast, which is understandable given how much the original characters have aged. Eric Nam will play Aang, Jessica Matten is Katara, Roman Zaragoza is Sokka, Dionne Quan is Toph, and Steven Yuen will portray Fire Lord Zuko. Fans will remember that the beloved Uncle Iroh was originally voiced by Mako, but after his death, Greg Baldwin took on the role in both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. It’s currently uncertain if Baldwin will reprise the role, especially considering his recent comments about Paramount.
