Although Logan was initially meant to be Patrick Stewart’s last portrayal of Professor X, he is rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday, offering a chance to clarify an intriguing nine-year-old mystery that remained unresolved. For nearly two decades, Stewart brought Charles Xavier, one of Marvel’s most potent mutants, to life on screen, from 2000’s X-Men to 2017’s Logan, where the character bid a poignant farewell. He revisited the role as an alternate version in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but his portrayal as part of Earth-838’s Illuminati didn’t offer any closure to the questions left unanswered in Logan.
Patrick Stewart is among several X-Men actors reprising their roles in “Avengers: Doomsday“, as announced at Marvel’s event in late March. It’s speculated that these actors will portray their mutant characters from the 20th Century Fox’s X-Men series, indicating that the film takes place before Charles Xavier’s death in “Logan“. This could mean we’ll witness an unexplored chapter of Professor X’s life on screen, but this development might be troubling for other X-Men.
Professor X Killed the X-Men Before 2017’s Logan
In the X-Men series of Fox, the movie “Logan” transported us to the year 2029, where no new mutants had been born for 25 years, making the species almost nonexistent. Logan (played by Hugh Jackman) lived in an abandoned smelter with Caliban (Stephen Merchant), and a Xavier suffering from dementia, whose telepathic seizures, caused by his illness, were only tolerable for a short time by Wolverine due to his own mutant powers. However, even these abilities were starting to weaken because of the adamantium in his bones.
In the film Logan, we observed multiple instances of these seizures, primarily at the smelting plant near the start, where only Wolverine and Caliban seemed to be affected. Another occurrence took place in Oklahoma City, affecting a larger number of people. The devastating capacity of these episodes was merely suggested, as it was disclosed that one which happened a year prior to the movie had left over 600 individuals injured, claimed the lives of seven mutants including several X-Men team members, and destroyed Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Additionally, Xavier’s mind was classified as a potential weapon of mass destruction.
Originally, James Mangold intended to depict a certain scene at the beginning of Logan, but opted against it to maintain the film’s character-focused and realistic tone. In contrast, the potential scene of Professor X losing control and annihilating the X-Men team could provide the required spectacle for 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday. Given that Patrick Stewart and other X-Men actors are reprising their roles, this devastating event could serve as a compelling precursor to the storyline of Logan.
Avengers: Doomsday Will Include Several Classic X-Men Actors (Including Patrick Stewart)
Among the seven confirmed X-Men stars reprising their roles in Avengers: Doomsday, Patrick Stewart is one of them. Other potential additions have not been disclosed yet. The cast includes Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, and Channing Tatum, who first appeared as Gambit in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. Thus, we can expect Magneto, Beast, Mystique, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler. It should be noted that this is the original, mature X-Men team rather than the younger group from Fox’s altered timeline, indicating the classic X-Men lineup will be reuniting.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to suggest that the talented actresses like Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore, and others might reprise their roles in “Avengers: Doomsday”. If this turns out to be true, it would undeniably put several of these characters at risk, considering Marvel Studios might delve into the tragic event known as the Westchester Incident. This incident, which left Professor X’s team decimated and many others injured, could potentially be elaborated upon with Doctor Doom’s introduction in “Avengers: Doomsday”. Intriguingly, Downey Jr.’s character in the MCU might have manipulated Xavier into erasing his superhero comrades.
Notable actors like Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Lashana Lynch, and others who have portrayed X-Men characters in recent Marvel Cinematic Universe projects are yet to be confirmed for “Avengers: Doomsday”. However, it appears that the Russo brothers’ 2026 crossover film is preparing to say goodbye to Fox’s X-Men team, paving the way for Marvel Studios’ own reboot of the mutant superhero group in the MCU. Scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, “Avengers: Doomsday” could be the biggest MCU movie to date, surpassed only by “Avengers: Secret Wars” in December 2027. The prospect of seeing Patrick Stewart reprise his role as Professor X is incredibly exciting.
