Avengers: Doomsday Hints at X-Men Crossover – Secret Plot Unveiled?

As a film enthusiast, I’ve been buzzing all week over the news about “Avengers: Doomsday.” The cast announcements have been popping up everywhere, and the inclusion of stars from the old Fox X-Men movies has sent waves of excitement through the fan community. Speculation is rife on what this movie might bring to the table. Could it resemble the epic clash between the 616 and 1610 Earths in “Secret Wars” (2015)? Or perhaps it’ll be akin to the crossover event comic “Avengers vs. X-Men”? Or will it be an entirely unique storyline? Fans are abuzz, trying to piece together the puzzle, with MCU and comic fans alike eagerly anticipating the fusion of the MCU and the Fox-Men in a blockbuster film.

Marvel Studios frequently draw inspiration from their comic book counterparts, boasting a wealth of fantastic Avengers and X-Men characters. The X-Men have been central figures in many captivating tales, one of which involves a crossover with a rendition of Earth’s Most Powerful Heroes – or perhaps more accurately, Earth’s Most Dangerous Villains. This story is known as “Avengers/X-Men: Utopia” by Matt Fraction, Terry Dodson, Luke Ross, and Mike Deodato Jr. While it may seem unconventional for a movie adaptation, there’s speculation that Avengers: Doomsday could draw inspiration from this intriguing narrative.

Avengers/X-Men: Utopia Went in Some Very Interesting Directions

At a pivotal moment for both groups, the comic series titled “Avengers/X-Men: Utopia” emerged. Marvel Comics was engrossed in the “Dark Reign” saga at that time. The narrative unfolded following the lethal strike on Skrull Empress Veranke by Norman Osborn during the aftermath of “Secret Invasion“. This event led to Osborn’s control over the superhero security structure established post-Civil War. He then formed his own Avengers team, comprising Ares, Sentry, and Noh-Varr, along with the villains Bullseye, Daken, Moonstone, and Venom, who donned costumes resembling Hawkeye, Wolverine, Ms. Marvel, and Spider-Man. These characters were central figures in the primary series of the “Dark Reign” era, “Dark Avengers“, which chronicled Osborn’s team as they battled global threats and bolstered Osborn’s influence within the superhero community.

In the meantime, the X-Men were also struggling. The event known as House of M had nearly wiped out mutants, leaving only 198 with their powers. The once-proud Xavier Institute was destroyed due to attacks from various enemies. With nowhere else to go, the X-Men moved to San Francisco and set up base in Graymalkin Industries, funded by Mutantes Sans Frontieres. Warren Worthingon III and Emma Frost’s wealth provided additional support. As anti-mutant protests, led by the Friends of Humanity, escalated into city-wide riots, Norman Osborn seized control, using his Cabal member Emma Frost to maintain order.

This storyline introduces ‘Avengers/X-Men: Utopia’. Osborn and his Dark Avengers, now in charge of HAMMER (Osborn’s SHIELD alternative), march into San Francisco to suppress riots. The Avengers and X-Men collide in conflict, and Osborn manipulates Emma to establish a Dark X-Men squad under his control. Meanwhile, HAMMER rounds up mutants and transports them to a hidden facility, fueling a device designed by the Dark Beast from the ‘Age of Apocalypse’. However, Osborn is outmaneuvered, as Emma had secretly joined the Cabal. Before the attack, she informed Cyclops, who devised a strategy to put both the Avengers and HAMMER in precarious positions. This would provide the X-Men not only with an opportunity to retaliate but also to create a new sanctuary for mutants.

‘Avengers/X-Men: Utopia’ is one of the top stories of its era. The ‘Dark Reign’ phase in Marvel comics was particularly exciting, as it was fascinating to see Norman Osborn wield power and observe how he handled it. The Dark Avengers were an intriguing team to follow, as we watched the villains take control, their internal conflicts, and the lengths they went to maintain their power. At that time, the X-Men books weren’t particularly engaging, as there wasn’t much direction for the team since they moved to San Francisco. ‘Utopia’ helped to change that, setting up an intriguing status quo for the X-Men and marking the beginning of the Utopia Era, which would become a crucial part of X-Men history. Although it appears that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ won’t utilize any elements from ‘Utopia’, there is still potential to adapt certain aspects of the story for the big screen.

There Is One Way to Bring the Ideas of Utopia to the MCU

The Thunderbolts, originally led by Norman Osborn (before “Dark Reign”), were a government-backed team of supervillains. Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is introducing this group. This move could potentially bring the storyline from the comic series “Utopia” to life on the big screen.

In the comics, “Avengers: Doomsday/Avengers: Secret Wars” features a concept called Incursions, where alternate universes collide. The X-Men’s universe (FoX-Men Earth) might encounter our MCU Earth, and the Thunderbolts could be tasked with destroying this world using an antimatter bomb or similar destructive device.

The X-Men attempt to prevent them, leading to a battle reminiscent of the one at the end of “Avengers/X-Men: Utopia.

It’s unlikely that the storyline from Avengers/X-Men: Utopia will play a significant role in Avengers: Doomsday, given its lack of cosmic elements and the fact that the latter is expected to be an interdimensional adventure. However, there might be a possibility of witnessing a confrontation between the Thunderbolts and the FoX-Men, which would undeniably be thrilling.
