The next Avengers movie has a pretty direct title: Avengers: Doomsday. It will introduce Doctor Doom to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and surprisingly, Robert Downey Jr. will be playing the villain! While we don’t know what Doctor Doom is planning yet, it’s likely connected to the multiverse, as the current saga of Marvel movies is wrapping up. One of the great things about exploring different realities is that anything can happen – even seeing an evil version of Captain America briefly – without needing a long, complicated storyline. But this freedom can also be risky, potentially leading to choices the filmmakers might regret down the line.
Because details about the plot of *Doomsday* are scarce, fans are closely examining everything released, including a recent photo from directors the Russo brothers. While they’ve shared behind-the-scenes glimpses of their Marvel films before, this image might be hinting at a significant plot point: a potentially problematic title change within the movie.
The Russo Brothers Love to Tease Titles
The anticipation for *Avengers: Endgame* was unprecedented. Initially, the movie was simply known as “Avengers 4.” Fans spent months speculating about the official title, but the mystery ended when the Russo brothers shared a picture hinting at “Endgame.” The first trailer then officially confirmed the title and the storyline. Even now, with a title already announced for the fifth *Avengers* film, the Russo brothers are playfully trying to build suspense again.
Marvel fans are currently buzzing about a photo from the set of *Doomsday*, noticing the letters “A” and “X” in it. With several actors from the *X-Men* movies returning for this Marvel Studios project, it’s expected that the team will appear. However, some believe this isn’t just a hint about the X-Men’s involvement, but a reveal of the movie’s title – potentially changing *Avengers: Doomsday* to *Avengers vs. X-Men: Doomsday*. While that would likely draw a big audience, it might be jumping the gun, especially since the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to carefully build its storylines right now.
The MCU Can’t Use Up Avengers vs. X-Men Too Early
Although a conflict between the X-Men and Avengers could happen in the upcoming *Doomsday* film, advertising it that way would create issues for the future. Marvel is already planning a fresh start for the X-Men, led by director Jake Schreier, aiming to introduce a new group of mutants in a way that stays true to the comics. If this reboot is successful, Marvel will want the freedom to pit the new X-Men against the Avengers in future movies, without being limited by a film that feels outdated.
I truly believe the original X-Men cast had a great run, and even though the movies weren’t always perfect, they really helped pave the way for superhero films as we know them. I wouldn’t want to see a cameo or small appearance tarnish what they’ve already accomplished, and I don’t think it would hurt the MCU at all. But honestly, making them the central focus of something huge like an ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ event just feels…too much. Sometimes, less is more, and I think restraint would be the better approach. It’s tempting to throw everything at the audience, but we don’t need to!
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
