Avengers: Doomsday Star Reveals Cut Fantastic Four Joke

A joke about the Fantastic Four was removed from a recent Marvel movie, and the actor who created it has shared what happened. The Fantastic Four officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2026 with the film The Fantastic Four: First Steps, alongside Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World. While Brave New World focused on the present state of the MCU and reintroduced some older characters, both Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps were designed to build towards future storylines. Specifically, the final scene in Thunderbolts was meant to set up the introduction of Avengers: Doomsday.

Wyatt Russell, who played John Walker/U.S. Agent in Thunderbolts, shared that a joke he made during filming was cut from the movie. He explained at MEGACON Orlando (via @AvengersUpdated) that when the team saw the spaceship approaching Earth, he spontaneously added the line, “What’s the four for?” referring to the Fantastic Four’s vessel. While he found it hilarious, his costars apparently thought it was a silly thing to say.

The Thunderbolts* Post-Credit Scene Was Shot During Avengers: Doomsday Filming

The scene after the credits of Thunderbolts – where the New Avengers spot the Fantastic Four’s shuttle – wasn’t filmed by the movie’s director, Jake Schreier. The Russo Brothers actually shot it later on the set of Avengers: Doomsday and added it to build excitement for the upcoming movie. It’s highly likely the New Avengers will be the first to meet whoever arrives on that shuttle, creating a lot of chaos before Sam Wilson’s Avengers team arrives on the scene.

Wyatt Russell is confirmed to return as U.S. Agent in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film. He’ll be joined by other characters like Red Guardian, Yelena Belova, Winter Soldier, and Ghost, and there’s a possibility Sentry will appear as well. Though initially hesitant to use his powers due to fear from a previous experience, Bob may overcome this. Russell also discussed the opportunity to further develop his character, John Walker, from a government-appointed Captain America replacement, through his role as an antihero in the Thunderbolts, and ultimately, potentially as a member of the New Avengers team.

Wyatt Russell wants to ensure his character, U.S. Agent, stays compelling throughout his appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He notes the character will evolve with each project – the U.S. Agent seen in Falcon and the Winter Soldier is distinct from the one planned for Avengers: Doomsday, and that version will be different again in Thunderbolts. This is crucial because Avengers: Doomsday will feature a large cast, including two Avengers teams, the Wakandans, Namor, and the Fantastic Four and X-Men, and U.S. Agent needs to be memorable.
