Avengers: Doomsday Still Doesn’t Have a Finished Script (& 1 Star Doesn’t Know if They’re Done Filming)

Over the past few years, Marvel Studios has shifted its approach from producing numerous titles to delivering quality content that fans will appreciate, resulting in fewer television series and movies on the big screen. Following the success of two films like Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, they are now concentrating on their upcoming Avengers film titled Avengers: Doomsday. This new movie will feature the comeback of some original X-Men from the Fox films, such as Rebecca Romijn who is set to reprise her role as Mystique. However, according to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the script for the film is still incomplete, and she’s unsure whether or not she has finished shooting for it.

At San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, Romijn participated in promoting Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. During a quick interview at the THR studio, she discussed her role in Doomsday. When asked if she had wrapped up shooting as Mystique, she admitted, “I’m not completely certain. The script isn’t fully written yet. It’s been incredibly enjoyable, and we’re still unsure about it. They maintain secrecy to keep things hidden.

It’s not unexpected that changes may occur throughout the production process, as Marvel Studios tends to use a method they call “plussing.” Although the script will initially be completed before filming begins, it can still undergo modifications during production. This approach allows writers, directors, and actors to express their ideas and concerns during filming, which is an unconventional yet collaborative way of making big-budget movies that seems effective for Marvel Studios.

The actor, Romijn, discussed her experience coming back as Mystique after such a long gap. She initially took on the role more than two decades ago and now finds herself back as the beloved mutant alongside some of her former colleagues. This she described as almost unbelievable. “Being with my old cast, along with a new one, was incredibly surreal,” Romijn said. “During much of the shooting, I had vivid dreams that were quite nostalgic. It was odd, really; my mind seemed to be struggling to process. It was like, ‘Wow, this is a character I played 25 years ago, 20 years ago.’ Yes, it definitely felt surreal.

As a cinephile eagerly anticipating the big screen, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement as I delve into the forthcoming cinematic event that is “Avengers: Doomsday.” Marking the first Avengers film since 2019’s groundbreaking “Avengers: Endgame,” this motion picture promises to be another blockbuster sensation from the Russo Brothers, who once again take up the reins as directors.

The star-studded ensemble will be headlined by none other than Robert Downey Jr., who is set to captivate audiences with his villainous portrayal of Victor von Doom. Joining him in this epic battle are Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, and Channing Tatum as Gambit.

The impressive cast will also feature Tenoch Huerta as Namor, Letitia Wright as Shuri, and Winston Duke as M’Baku. Furthermore, the talented ensembles of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and “Thunderbolts” are expected to make their appearances within this film.

With such a power-packed lineup and the Russo Brothers at the helm, “Avengers: Doomsday” is undoubtedly poised to leave an indelible mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and cinematic history as a whole.

Originally cast members from the X-Men series are set to reprise their roles in Avengers: Doomsday, joining Famke Janssen. These include Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier/Professor X, James Marsden as Scott Summers/Cyclops, Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, Alan Cumming as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, and Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy/Beast. The film, Avengers: Doomsday, is scheduled for release on the big screen on December 18, 2026.
