Despite the fact that Avengers: Doomsday has completed its five months of main filming, not much is known about the movie. Joe and Anthony Russo have shared a few vague clues, but details about the first part of this two-part story haven’t been widely released, except that Robert Downey Jr.’s character will be the main villain. At least, in Doomsday. However, rumors are circulating rapidly. Some speculate Downey Jr. will play both Doctor Doom and Iron Man. Others believe the film will be based on the 2012 crossover event Avengers vs. X-Men.
But what if there’s another possibility – that the actors portraying the X-Men will actually be playing two separate iterations of the team? There are several clues suggesting this might be the case. Let’s explore those reasons right now.
The Costumes Reveal Showed X-Men Who Looked Distinctly Separate from Their Fox Counterparts
Currently, the most reliable information about the character designs in Avengers: Doomsday comes from the gift bags given to crew members during production with the Russos. Looking at these, it seems that most of the characters haven’t changed significantly in appearance since their last live-action appearance in the MCU.
Every member of the Fantastic Four (except for what appears to be Franklin Storm in the lower right corner) looks identical to their appearance in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. This also holds true for the members of the New Avengers; U.S. Agent is still wearing the hat he had on during the ending scene of Thunderbolts*.
The characters who really stand out are the X-Men. Professor X, Mystique, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Magneto (we’re assuming it’s him under the bag’s label, which is probable given that Ian McKellen is the only actor who isn’t clearly visible) all resemble their X-Men ’97 designs more closely than the versions we first saw in the original Fox X-Men films. They aren’t exact copies of their ’97 counterparts, but they’re definitely closer in appearance than they were in the movies from the 2000s, or in later films like X-Men: Days of Future Past.
However, considering Beast appears exactly as he did in the post-credit scene of The Marvels and in X-Men ’97, it strongly suggests that Doomsday will include live-action versions of characters from the ’97 series. This then raises the question: why would Disney and Marvel specifically bring back actors from the original trilogy, completely excluding any characters from X-Men: First Class to Dark Phoenix?
Really, why not simply hire new actors who closely resemble the animated designs? The reason seems to be a tribute to X-Men, X2, and X-Men: The Last Stand>. Therefore, it looks like we’ll see the actors from those films reprise their roles as their mutant characters across multiple iterations.
Channing Tatum’s Hints
While publicizing his latest film, Roofman, Tatum shared with Entertainment Tonight that Avengers: Doomsday will feature even more surprising and impressive scenes than Deadpool & Wolverine. He emphasized that there will be significantly more of these moments.
According to Tatum, “I can’t even explain it. It’s going to be unbelievably intense – like when Blade appears in Deadpool & Wolverine, people will be completely blown away. But this will be even more extreme, maybe 50 times more! It’s going to be something else. And as a comic book fan, you simply won’t be prepared.”
I’m starting to wonder if all this buzz is just hype with no real substance, honestly. But, you have to remember, Channing Tatum is a huge Marvel fan – especially Gambit. So when he hints at moments that feel similar to Wesley Snipes’ iconic entrance as Blade, I definitely pay attention! It sounds like he really means it. We’ll just have to be patient and wait until December 18, 2026 to see if his words hold up. It’s a long wait, but maybe worth it! You can find more details on this website, if you’re curious.
