The trailers for Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday strongly suggest this will be Marvel’s biggest movie yet, potentially featuring a battle between the Avengers and the X-Men. Following the success of Avatar: Fire & Ash, Marvel is releasing new trailers each week to build excitement and give fans glimpses of the story. These teasers have already confirmed Chris Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers, shown off new looks for characters like Thor, Shuri, and Namor, and indicated that the entire multiverse is in serious danger.
The biggest buzz is around the new trailer for the X-Men’s Doomsday, which features Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellan as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops. Other X-Men characters will also appear, and there’s talk that Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey might be back. The trailer suggests things aren’t looking good for the X-Men, with Professor X and Magneto talking about death and Cyclops appearing deeply saddened – possibly because Jean Grey is in danger again. All of this seems to be leading up to the massive Avengers: Secret Wars event, but it’s unclear why the X-Men are so central to the story.
Why Marvel Universes Are Colliding in Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel’s initial explorations of the multiverse were somewhat unclear, and it wasn’t until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that the reasons for dimensional collisions were fully explained. Doctor Strange discovered that the Illuminati in another reality guarded their world against multiversal threats because they knew how dangerous it was to travel between dimensions. According to that universe’s Reed Richards, the more someone interacts with another universe, the higher the chance of a catastrophic event called an incursion.
Reed explained that an ‘incursion’ happens when the lines between universes break down, causing them to crash into each other – potentially wiping out one or both. Fans of the comics will recognize this as a universe-ending event, like the one that led to the 2015 ‘Secret Wars’ storyline. With Avengers: Doomsday clearly setting up Avengers: Secret Wars, it’s likely we’ll see an incursion happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie’s focus on an alternate reality featuring the X-Men hints that this is the universe colliding with ours, but the reason for the collision remains a mystery.
The Answer Lies in The Marvels
Surprisingly, the key to understanding Avengers: Doomsday can be found in the 2023 film The Marvels. While the Captain Marvel sequel didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $206.1 million worldwide against a $374 million budget, it did find success on Disney+ where it quickly became the most-watched title. Despite the film’s mixed overall performance, a single scene within it is crucial for understanding the upcoming Avengers installment.
The end of The Marvels showed Photon unexpectedly sent hurtling through the multiverse. She landed in a universe where the X-Men exist, and was being helped by Beast, played by Kelsey Grammer. Grammer previously played Beast in the X-Men movies from Fox, and will reprise the role in the upcoming Doomsday film. This strongly suggests that Photon is now in the same X-Men universe shown in the Doomsday trailer. Without the ability to travel the multiverse herself, she’s stuck there and will likely team up with the X-Men, including a version of her mother, Captain Marvel, from that universe.
Here’s the problem: the longer Photon stays in the X-Men timeline, the greater the chance the two universes will collide in a dangerous event called an incursion. The scene after the credits in The Marvels directly sets up a crossover between the X-Men and the Avengers, specifically a collision between the X-Men universe (with characters from the Fox movies) and the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Considering this, the teaser for Avengers: Doomsday makes complete sense – these two realities are crashing into each other, and both could be destroyed.
While The Marvels didn’t make a big splash at the box office, it’s still a significant film for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The scene after the credits is particularly important, as it teases the arrival of the X-Men and hints at what’s to come. This highlights both the strength and the challenge of a connected universe like the MCU – every detail, even seemingly small ones, can have a larger impact down the line.
