Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame Wasted a Major Villain (They Almost Beat the Most Powerful MCU Heroes)

Throughout the Infinity Saga, the Avengers prepared for the massive threat of Thanos, culminating in battles in Infinity War and Endgame. While Thanos understandably took center stage, the smaller villains often got lost in the shuffle. This was probably inevitable, given the already complex plot with so many heroes involved. The films were huge events, and adding more villains could have made them overly complicated. Still, it’s a shame that characters like the Black Order didn’t get more screen time, as they were compelling and powerful figures in their own right.

The MCU had some underused villains with incredible potential. Ebony Maw, for example, was powerful enough to defeat Thanos before he had the Infinity Gauntlet, making it strange he worked for him. Sadly, we likely won’t see that story explored. Another villain, despite nearly defeating several major heroes, was also sidelined, never reaching her full potential because Thanos dominated the narrative. We barely got a glimpse of what she could truly do.

Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame Wasted Proxima Midnight as a Villain

While Thanos is gathering the Infinity Stones in Infinity War and Endgame, his elite group, the Black Order, doesn’t get much screen time. They do have a few important battles with the Avengers, but those fights are brief. This is unfortunate, as the Black Order members are incredibly dangerous. Ebony Maw is the most prominent of the group in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Proxima Midnight also demonstrates significant power in Avengers: Infinity War. However, her potential feels underused. She’s strong enough to deserve more action, and her cruel, determined personality could have supported a compelling villain storyline.

We don’t get to see much of Proxima Midnight – only briefly during a couple of action scenes in Avengers: Infinity War. While she shows potential as a threat when fighting Wanda and Vision in Edinburgh, the films don’t really develop her character. She does reappear to battle Wanda and the Avengers later, but it’s in a large-scale fight with little focus on individual characters. Ultimately, her story feels unfinished, and none of the members of the Black Order make a lasting impression in Avengers: Endgame. Despite being a capable fighter who can hold her own against the Avengers’ strongest heroes, Proxima Midnight feels underused.

Proxima Midnight Almost Beat the Most Powerful MCU Heroes

As a big Marvel fan, I’ve always felt Proxima Midnight was underutilized. She’s seriously powerful! Remember in Avengers: Infinity War how much trouble she and Corvus Glaive gave Wanda and Vision? They really struggled, and Proxima only retreated because Corvus got hurt – it makes you wonder how badly she could have damaged them. Then, even later in the film, she held her own against Wanda, Black Widow, and Okoye! They barely managed to win, and only by turning her own weapons against her. It just feels like they set her up as a major threat, then didn’t really follow through on that potential.

As a comic book fan, I have to admit I was a little disappointed with how Proxima Midnight and the rest of Thanos’ Black Order were handled in Infinity War and Endgame. They’re a much bigger deal in the comics, and the movies really didn’t give them the chance to shine. Honestly, I kept thinking, wouldn’t it have been amazing if Marvel had introduced them properly beforehand? Building up the Black Order would have made Thanos feel even more terrifying and added a lot more weight to the entire Infinity Saga, especially that epic finale. It felt like a missed opportunity, really.

A Greater Focus on the Black Order Would Have Made the Infinity Saga Even Better

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced a lot of memorable villains leading up to Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. However, it might have been beneficial to explore the Black Order – Thanos’s elite group – in their own films beforehand. Characters like Ebony Maw and Proxima Midnight, with their connections to Thanos as his adopted children, have compelling backstories that could have been developed. Featuring them in solo movies would have heightened the tension and made Thanos’s eventual appearance even more impactful. Sadly, it seems fans won’t get much more than brief glimpses into these characters’ stories.
