*Warning – contains plot details for Babies episodes 1-3*
All six episodes of Stefan Golaszewski’s new drama, Babies, are now streaming on iPlayer. It’s a moving and often difficult story, though ultimately hopeful, that explores some challenging themes.
The show centers on Stephen and Lisa, a couple portrayed by Paapa Essiedu and Siobhán Cullen, as they navigate the heartbreak of repeated miscarriages while trying to start a family. This struggle unfolds as those around them, including their friend Nicola, begin having children – Nicola welcomes a baby named Alex.
When Lisa and Stephen were going through a really difficult time, while lying in bed together, Lisa confessed that a part of her wished harm upon Alex, even hoping he would die.
Stephen was shocked and asked, “Are you saying you want Nicola’s baby to die?” Lisa replied with a chilling, “A little bit.”
Stephen simply says, “Jesus. That’s so dark,” before Lisa adds, “Yeah, it’s really dark.”

TopMob had a special conversation with Essiedu, Cullen, and Jack Bannon (who plays Dave). They asked Cullen how she felt when she first read the surprising scene in the script and what she thought about it.
Cullen praised Stefan’s writing, saying it’s remarkable how well-developed and realistic his characters are.
Most writers aim to make their main characters completely likable, but what Stefan has achieved is beautiful because his characters are flawed, make mistakes, and sometimes act in ways that are unpleasant or even mean. This complexity makes them feel more real.

Cullen explained that alongside their struggles, we also see these characters at their strongest when they fully support each other and meet each other’s needs. He believes this combination of vulnerability and connection is what makes them so interesting, relatable, and genuinely human.
She’s incredibly vulnerable and honest in that scene, and while it’s tough to listen to, I think a lot of people will connect with how she expresses some really difficult and private thoughts and feelings we all experience sometimes.
The series follows Stephen and Lisa’s story, and also explores Dave’s budding romance with Amanda, who is portrayed by Charlotte Riley.
