Marisa Abela is an actress recognized for her role as Yasmin Kara-Hanani in the series Industry, but she’s gained wider attention for portraying Amy Winehouse in the 2024 film, Back to Black.
In a recent interview with TopMob magazine for View From My Sofa, Abela stated she would absolutely consider portraying a real person in a role again, but with some conditions.
She explained that she wasn’t sure she’d want to play a very famous character like Amy, because the pressure to portray them perfectly would be quite intense.
Abela explained she’s a big fan of history, both in novels and factual accounts. Because of this, she’d prefer to play someone from the past who’s famous for their accomplishments, like an artist or writer, rather than just being a well-known personality. She specifically mentioned she’d love the chance to portray Sylvia Plath, or even Helen of Troy.

You can currently hear Imogen Waterhouse as Elizabeth Bennet and Harris Dickinson as Mr. Darcy in the new full-cast audio adaptation of Pride and Prejudice on Audible.
The film also stars Will Poulter as Mr. Wickham, Jessie Buckley as Caroline Bingley, Toheeb Jimoh as Mr. Bingley, and Glenn Close as Lady Catherine de Bourgh, along with a number of other talented actors.
She’s also returning as Yasmin in the fourth season of Industry, which just finished filming and should be available to watch next year.
Abela received the award for Best Actress for her work on the show earlier this year. When discussing the upcoming fourth season, she hinted that it will continue to build on the progress made in season three, promising further development and improvement.
“So I am excited to see the response season four gets, which we are filming right now.”
