Bad News, Netflix is About to Lose Its Only Live-Action Spider-Man Movies

Unfortunately, Netflix subscribers who enjoy Spider-Man movies will soon have fewer options. Starting March 1st, the platform is removing all of its remaining live-action Spider-Man films. While the animated movie Into the Spider-Verse will still be available, fans hoping to watch the live-action versions won’t be able to do so on Netflix anymore.

In a few days, both The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will no longer be available on streaming. These films star Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. The first movie, with a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, follows Peter as a teenager trying to figure out his identity and feelings for Gwen Stacy. His investigation into his parents’ disappearance after finding a briefcase leads him to Oscorp and Dr. Curt Connors, where he unintentionally clashes with Connors’ villainous alter ego, the Lizard. The second film received a lower rating of 51%. It focuses on the rise of Electro, a dangerously powerful enemy, and the reappearance of Peter’s friend, Harry Osborn.

Both Films Deserved More Love

Both films have faced criticism for their villains, but the negative reviews seem a bit harsh. Andrew Garfield and Emma Watson share incredible chemistry, making Gwen and Peter’s love story truly special and adding emotional impact to the second film’s sad ending. Many feel Garfield perfectly embodies Spider-Man, and his suit is widely considered the best of all the live-action versions. As critic Patrick Cavanaugh notes about The Amazing Spider-Man, Garfield and Stone have fantastic on-screen energy, and the web-swinging scenes are thrilling, though the villains and overall plot aren’t as strong.

Regular moviegoers tend to be more positive about these films, especially The Amazing Spider-Man 2. One Reddit user shared, “No matter what critics say, this is my favorite Spider-Man movie. It really helped me through a difficult time. I love the overall feel, the music, Peter and Gwen’s relationship, and how the movie looks.”

There’s a definite nostalgic appeal to The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While both films are very much a product of their time and could have developed their villains and storylines further, they ultimately deliver what you want from a superhero movie: a good time.
