Ballard Season 2: Is It Happening? Everything You Need to Know!

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Ballard season 1.*

After its debut earlier this month, Amazon Prime Video’s Ballard series has swiftly climbed up their ranking system and is undeniably a success among viewers.

The Bosch offshoot show focuses on Detective Renee Ballard, portrayed by Maggie Q, who first appeared during the third season of Bosch: Legacy, as she heads up a fresh and financially strapped team within the LAPD’s cold case unit.

As she delves into the forgotten cases of the city with a fresh squad, she quickly uncovers that there’s a larger issue hidden within the LAPD, which she begins to sense is a perilous conspiracy.

Ever since the initial airing, Maggie Q, one of the leading stars, has openly expressed her uncertainty as to whether the show will secure another season or not.

However, let’s delve into the updates regarding a possible second season of Ballard. Here’s what we currently know.

Will there be a Ballard season 2?

As of now, Prime Video has not renewed Ballard for season 2.

Given that the show was recently launched this month, being connected to the expansive Bosch universe (spanning over seven seasons for Bosch), there’s optimism that Ballard might return for additional episodes.

When asked about the potential for another season, Maggie Q expressed uncertainty to The Hollywood Reporter, saying: “The industry has changed since then, and I’m not sure…

It seems almost unidentifiable to me, and these shows appear to be easily disposable. In just a blink of an eye, they could discard a show, and it often feels as if the entire universes and people’s lives don’t significantly matter in that moment.

Studios typically have multiple choices, but we have a team of writers working diligently on the storyline for our second season. The plot development sounds very intriguing, but I’ve been in this situation before where a writers’ room was hired only to have the series cancelled. So when people say, ‘Maggie, of course!’ I reply, ‘No, no, no.’ There is no guarantee in this business.

I’m not pessimistic in the least; I’m an optimistic individual. However, I prefer to be grounded in reality. This morning, I received reviews and I wasn’t keen on going through them. It’s wonderful that they’re favorable, but I choose not to read them.

When would a potential Ballard season 2 release?

Given that Ballard hasn’t received renewal at this point, it’s challenging to pinpoint an exact release date for potential Season 2.

If series lead Q is granted approval, they’ve hinted at providing further details about the production timeline.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I eagerly share that if another season of Ballard graces our screens, I’m confident I’ll be returning to set my sights on the fall for filming.

With plans for filming set to commence later this year, it’s quite possible that we might see the arrival of Ballard season 2 on our screens by the year 2026.

What could a potential Ballard season 2 be about?

One could confidently conclude that Ballard season 1 concluded in a suspenseful manner, leaving ample room for exploration in case there is a possibility of a second season.

In the season finale, I found myself being led away in handcuffs and charged with the murder of Ricardo Chavira’s character, Olivas. Our altercation at his residence had escalated to an intense level prior to his unfortunate demise.

Ultimately, it was uncovered in the series that Olivas, who was already known to be a sexual offender, was not only leading but was also overseeing a band of crooked LAPD officials managing an illegal gun trade with connections to the Zacatecas cartel.

In a turn of events, after Ballard had accused Olivas of an attempted sexual assault, and Olivas having physically harmed Parker, they decide to join forces to catch him and collect sufficient proof for his arrest.

Yet, when Olivas strikes a bargain to reveal secrets about his colleagues in exchange for his liberty, he is set free. Later, Ballard goes to confront him at his residence, unknowingly leaving some of her DNA there – yet, was it really she who ended up killing him?

Over the course of the series, Ballard and her team delved into a serial killer case that had previously claimed lives of women across the city. They eventually uncovered the shocking truth: Gary Pearlman (Kevin Dunn), who happened to be the father of councilman Jake (Noah Bean), was the perpetrator. This revelation came as a surprise, since Jake himself had been instrumental in setting up the cold case unit with his financial support.

Unfortunately, when Gary learns that Michael Mosley is the murderer and tries to harm Ballard as well, he ends up taking his life instead.

With Ballard arrested and the true culprit behind Olivas’s death yet to be found, there are many intriguing aspects that could surface in a possible next season. So, let’s stay tuned and find out what lies ahead.

Who could star in a potential Ballard season 2?

Given that the final episode of season 1 concluded with the demise of characters Olivas and Rawls, it’s unlikely they will reappear if there is a possible second season. Similarly, as Gary was apprehended for numerous homicides, his future appearances might be centered around courtroom scenes.

It’s quite likely that we’ll witness Maggie Q returning to portray the character of Ballard once more, accompanied by her dedicated team. They’re certain to put in a lot of effort to uncover the true culprit behind Olivas’ death.

In much the same way as Season 1, we can anticipate that Titus Welliver’s character, Harry Bosch, will reappear. Therefore, if there is a potential Season 2, we would likely see the following cast members:

  • Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard
  • Courtney Taylor as Samira Parker
  • John Carroll Lynch as Thomas Laffont
  • Rebecca Field as Colleen Hatteras
  • Victoria Moroles as Martina Castro
  • Amy Hill as Tutu
  • Noah Bean as Jake Pearlman
  • Alain Uy as Nelson Hastings
  • Hector Hugo as Captain Berchem
  • Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch
