Barbie is honoring two of its own.
As a lifestyle expert, I find it deeply saddening to share that two talented individuals, Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi, tragically lost their lives in a car accident on Italy’s A4 Turin-Milan highway on July 27. These gentlemen were not just any designers, but the beloved creators behind some of our most cherished dolls. Their loss leaves an indelible void in the toy industry and in the hearts of those who admired their work. My thoughts are with their families during this difficult time.
On Instagram, July 28th, the Barbie team expressed that these designers, fueled by their fervor and skill, as well as their lifelong passion for the brand, transformed every piece they worked on into a true work of art. Not only were they exceptionally talented, but they also brought an infectious energy that illuminated any environment they stepped into.
In 1999, Paglino (age 52) and Grossi (age 48), who were both romantically involved and professional partners, established their company, Magia2000. This venture was born out of their shared passion for customizing Barbie dolls, as stated on their website. Over the years, this passion propelled their careers further, leading them to found the Italian Doll Convention and serve as consultants for “Barbie The Icon” within the country.
As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but gush over how my favorite company has paid tribute to some extraordinary women like Cher, Victoria Beckham, and Sarah Jessica Parker. However, the true inspiration that sets my heart ablaze is none other than Madonna. Time and time again, they’ve unveiled projects that echo the essence of the “Material Girl,” with their latest masterpiece being a stunning homage to Andy Warhol’s iconic “Marilyn Monroe” artwork. It’s as if they’ve captured her spirit in a way no one else has!
Barbie added, “They made us feel welcome, joyful, and like we truly belonged.” Their kindness was endless, as they crafted countless dolls to raise funds for charities dear to fellow collectors. The brand and our community of enthusiasts are improved because they cherished the brand, and we’ve been enriched by knowing them and sharing their love for it.
While en route from Novara Est to Marcallo Mesero in northwest Italy with their friend Amodeo Giurn, Paglino and Grossi were involved in a fatal head-on collision with another vehicle that had crossed onto their side of the road. The driver of the other car, Egidio Ceriano, 82, also lost his life, as did Giurn, who was 38 years old. Giurn’s wife, age 37, was the only survivor in this tragic accident.
Upon the sad demise of Paglino and Grossi, members of the doll community mourned for the collectors. One individual posted on Magia2000’s Instagram account, “Your exceptional artistry will forever remain unmatched. Your kindness and charitable actions serve as a shining example of the extraordinary, beautiful spirit that emanated from you both.
