Barry Manilow is embarking on a health journey.
The singer of “Mandy” recently revealed he’s been diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer, after previously dealing with bronchitis this year.
Barry, 82, shared on Instagram that a recent MRI revealed a cancerous spot on his left lung. He’s thankful his doctor ordered the scan, as it was caught early – which is great news! He credits both luck and his doctor for the early detection, allowing for treatment to remove the spot.
However, the Grammy winner admitted that his cancer diagnosis will affect his upcoming shows.
He shared that now that his Christmas concerts are finished, he’s having surgery to remove a spot. Doctors don’t think it’s spread, and he’s getting tests to be sure. Thankfully, he won’t need chemotherapy or radiation – just rest, chicken soup, and watching old episodes of I Love Lucy.
He also mentioned that the January concerts at the arena would need to be moved to a later date. Although the artist plans to be back on stage by February, he expressed his regret about having to reschedule.
He continued, expressing his regret about having to change the plans. He explained that everyone involved had been excited about the January shows and was disappointed by the necessary adjustments.
Even though he had a medical procedure coming up, Barry stayed positive in his message, saying he was eagerly anticipating getting back on stage.

Barry predicted his first weekend of shows after his recovery would be a lot of fun, writing, ‘Something tells me that February weekend is going to be one big party.’ He also wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
He encouraged his supporters to follow his example and get tested immediately if they experience any symptoms, saying, “If you feel even a little unwell, please get tested!”
Barry isn’t alone in using a health diagnosis to raise awareness. Actor James Van Der Beek, who revealed his stage three colorectal cancer diagnosis last year, recently said that going through the illness has actually been a positive experience for him – the “best thing that ever happened.”
James shared on Today that receiving a serious diagnosis made him realize he needed to make significant life changes he wouldn’t have considered otherwise. He admitted he’d never really understood the importance of slowing down before this experience.
As he put it, “Really, the biggest change would be this journey of self-love.”
