Everyone expected DC K.O. to be chaotic, but no one predicted Batman’s storyline. While other DC heroes are battling for the Heart of Apokolips in a tournament, Batman was surprisingly eliminated early on. True to form, he had a plan B – a suit of Apokoliptian armor – which has kept him in the game. Now, he’s on a personal quest forcing him to confront his deepest fears.
Bruce Wayne isn’t returning to the tournament as Batman; instead, he’s being trapped in strange, fear-based illusions created by the Heart of Apokolips. These illusions show him alternate realities where each of his former Robins has become Batman. He’s already seen a changed Dick Grayson, and now he’s experiencing what Jason Todd is like as the Dark Knight. To escape, Bruce must confront these unsettling scenarios, which have now reached a point where he’s being combined with a famous villain.
Batman Becomes Clayface to Stop Red Hood’s Dark Knight

The second issue of Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora’s DC K.O. Knightfight continues the intense action as Bruce Wayne battles Dick Grayson, who’s also operating as Batman. Dick quickly proves to be the stronger fighter, but Bruce uses Dick’s trusting nature to gain an advantage. This leads Bruce to understand he needs to fight without restraint – like the other combatants in the tournament – if he wants to escape. He tries to attack Dick, but instead of harming him, Bruce finds himself transported to a different Gotham City, one watched over by Jason Todd.
Gotham City has been completely isolated after a gas attack orchestrated by the Joker, leaving Jason Todd’s Batman as the sole guardian. He captures anyone who tries to enter and locks them away in Arkham Asylum. Adding to the chaos, Jason believes Bruce Wayne is dead and that the Batman he’s fighting is actually Clayface, who’s lost his mind. Batman insists he’s not Clayface and manages to break free, confronting Jason before attempting to escape. However, he quickly realizes the gas attack is so widespread that there’s nowhere left to go.
Jason explains the strange history of his world to Batman, including how he discovered Clayface impersonating him. Bruce quickly understands this isn’t a rational conversation, but another test orchestrated by the Heart of Apokolips. Realizing he has no choice but to play along, Bruce accepts the reality that he is Clayface in this alternate world. This unlocks Clayface’s abilities within him, and Batman uses these newfound powers to finally fight Red Hood on equal footing.
Batman Will Go to Whatever Lengths He Must to Win

Even though this situation seems amazing, it’s important to remember it’s all an illusion created by the Heart of Apokolips. Batman essentially broke the rules to continue, and the Heart is reacting by testing him with difficult obstacles. The Heart can only be won by someone who proves they are ruthless and determined. And for Batman, what could be more difficult than fighting his old allies – his former sidekicks – who now know his deepest fears about them?
With the entire DC Universe in danger, Batman knows he has to do everything he can to obtain the Heart of Apokolips. Even if that means embracing something as strange as becoming Clayface, he’s willing to do it. Seeing Batman combine with such a unique villain is undeniably exciting. Imagine Batman’s intelligence and skills combined with the ability to shapeshift into any weapon imaginable – it’s the kind of wild idea that makes comic books great! However, it’s important to remember what this transformation actually means for Bruce.
This isn’t just a flashy team-up between Batman and a villain; it’s a powerful display of Bruce Wayne’s unwavering resolve and his willingness to make extreme sacrifices to protect the DC Universe. While he wouldn’t willingly become Clayface to harm someone he cares about, he’ll do whatever it takes – even that – to increase his chances of obtaining the Heart of Apokolips. Hopefully, the next installment will fully explore this transformation and allow the Batman/Clayface combination to truly stand out.
