Matt Brittin, the head of the BBC, revealed that over half (550 positions) of the previously announced job reductions – between 1,800 and 2,000 total – will impact BBC News and staff working on TV and radio programs.
In an email sent to employees on Wednesday, June 17th, Brittin announced that the BBC will be reducing its spending on television, radio, and news programs by £80 million. This will involve canceling some shows and reassessing the future of their traditional TV channels.
In an email, he announced plans to cut spending on commissioned content for Content, News, and Nations by approximately £80 million starting in 2027-28. They will also be evaluating their TV channels and radio stations as more people switch to online platforms.
Brittin, a former Google executive who recently joined the BBC, didn’t say which programs might be cancelled as part of these plans.

Brittin explained that cuts to BBC News and its regional teams are projected to save £160 million. In addition, around 700 positions will be eliminated across the BBC’s internal departments.

Brittin announced the company will cut senior leadership positions by at least 10% to streamline operations and speed up decision-making.
He added that more details on the cuts and savings will be announced in “the months ahead”.
This decision happens as the BBC’s operating license is being reviewed, and the current license will finish in late 2027.
