The popular British TV show Ghosts is getting a new life as a feature film, titled Ghosts: The Possession of Button House. The original series inspired the successful CBS sitcom Ghosts, which follows Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay Arondekar (Utkarsh Ambudkar), a couple dealing with the many ghosts Sam can see.
Before the American show Ghosts premiered, the original British version introduced a similar premise: Alison Cooper (played by Charlotte Ritchie) could see ghosts, which dramatically changed her life and that of her husband, Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe). Although the British Ghosts concluded in 2023 after five seasons, plans are now underway to continue the story with a full-length movie.
BBC Ghosts Rises From The Dead With A Feature-Length Film
The popular BBC comedy Ghosts is continuing its story with a new movie, Ghosts: The Possession of Button House, which will be released in UK cinemas on October 23rd. Production on the film, made by the BBC, starts early this year and will feature the return of key cast members, including Mike and Alison, the main living residents of Button House.
Similar to the CBS show Ghosts, the BBC version centers around Mike and Alison, who unexpectedly inherit a grand house from a relative they barely knew. After a fall down the stairs in the house, Alison gains the ability to see ghosts, and that’s what the series is all about.
The final installment saw Mike and Alison selling their country home as they prepared for their first child. Though they intended to move on from the Button House, they once again found themselves involved with supernatural events, bringing together many of the original characters from the series.
The team behind the show Ghosts will reprise their acting roles. Matthew Baynton will play Thomas Thorne, a romantic poet from the Regency era, while Simon Farnaby will be Julian Fawcett, a Conservative MP. Martha Howe-Douglas returns as Lady Fanny Button, Jim Howick as Pat Butcher, a former scout leader, Laurence Rickard as Robin, a caveman, and Ben Willbond as Captain, an army officer from World War II.
Lolly Adefope will reprise her role as Kitty in the upcoming movie, Ghosts: The Possession of Button House. While details about the plot are still secret, expect more spooky adventures and some new cast members. The movie is written by most of the same team who created the original series, and Simon Hynd will direct.
How BBC Ghosts Has Created An Iconic Franchise
The return of BBC’s Ghosts is a big deal for fans of the show and the franchise it launched. Though the original series ran for five seasons (2019-2023), it became a cultural hit, inspiring spin-offs and now, a full-length special.
The American version of Ghosts is the most well-known remake, but many other countries – including France, Germany, Australia, and Greece – have also created their own versions. Plus, the CBS show Ghosts has been renewed for a sixth season, meaning it will eventually have more seasons than the original series.
The new film takes the story in a surprising direction. The creators initially believed they’d finished with the series, and Button House, but a compelling new idea brought them back. As they explained, “We couldn’t resist returning to our haunted home!” (according to BCG).
However, the movie isn’t just an extra addition to the series. It paves the way for other similar stories and could even encourage adaptations of Ghosts to be made into full-length films. The American version of the show should definitely consider this, as its popularity suggests fans are eager for more content.
