After showing off gameplay for Beast of Reincarnation, people started comparing it to games in the Soulslike genre. But in a recent interview with Famitsu, game director Kota Furushima explained that the combat in Beast of Reincarnation will be noticeably different from what players expect in games made by FromSoftware.
One key feature of Beast of Reincarnation is adjustable difficulty levels. Game Freak wants the game to be accessible to players new to action games, so it will offer easier settings. Players can also use the skill tree to make challenging sections more manageable.
The game is designed to be accessible to players of all skill levels, even those who don’t typically enjoy action games,” explained Furushima. “Players can adjust the difficulty to suit their preferences, and we encourage them to do so. We’re happy if people can enjoy the game by using the skill tree and Koo’s support to make it easier – that’s perfectly fine with us!”
While Beast of Reincarnation won’t be easy, the developers want players to try out various ways to fight. To help with this, both the main character, Emma, and her wolf companion, Koo, will have three different skill trees each. These trees will let players customize their combat style, choosing options like close-quarters fighting, stealth, or long-distance attacks.
We expect players will sometimes lose, and we want them to have fun experimenting with different strategies and Kuu’s abilities to improve. However, we don’t want the game to be impossible to beat on the first try, or require endless retries. We hope players will find it challenging but approachable, without feeling overwhelmed.
Furushima previously mentioned that the core team at Game Freak developing Beast of Reincarnation is small, but other companies are helping with the game’s development. When including everyone involved, he said the overall team is actually quite big.
As you’d expect, the development team is quite big. But it’s not just people who work directly at Game Freak. We brought in a lot of partner companies and studios to help bring our vision for the game to life, so we’re fortunate to have a lot of external support as well.
He explained that the idea for Beast of Reincarnation originated from an internal Game Freak contest where employees were asked to develop new game concepts.
I was looking to create something truly original, different from our previous work. Luckily, Game Freak has an internal program called the Gear Project – a contest run by our president, Satoshi Tajiri – that encourages employees to develop new game ideas. I submitted my design and was given the go-ahead to start development.
The game Beast of Reincarnation is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S this summer.
