As a longtime fan of Tim Burton’s unique brand of dark fantasy and horror, I must admit that I’m taken aback by the news that the upcoming “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” sequel has earned a PG-13 rating. While the original 1988 film was rated PG, it certainly pushed the boundaries for what was considered appropriate for younger audiences at the time with its macabre humor and eerie supernatural elements.
In simpler terms, the classic film “Beetlejuice” is a must-watch horror comedy for beginners due to its humorous approach to fear. However, the upcoming sequel, titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” has been given a PG-13 rating by the MPA instead of the original’s PG rating. This is because the sequel contains more violent scenes, frightening images, strong language, sexual content, and brief drug use. While some of these elements were present in the original movie, it remains to be seen if the new film maintains the same lighthearted tone or explores the darker themes more deeply. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is set for release on September 6th.
During the 1970s and 1980s, several films were released in cinemas carrying PG ratings, yet they contained mature themes and graphic scenes. Noteworthy examples include “Gremlins” (1984) and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (also 1984), which earned PG ratings despite their violent content and intense sequences. The film “Beetlejuice” (1988), released when the PG-13 rating was already established, still received a PG rating despite its explicit language in one scene where Keaton’s character Beetlejuice says, “Nice crappy model!”
As a huge fan of quirky and supernatural comedies, I’m beyond excited to share that Beetlejuice is back in a new movie! Having grown up watching the original film, I can personally attest to the unique charm and hilarity it brings.
Burton, a unique director in his own right, helms this production, which is written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar for the screenplay (known as “Wednesday”), and boasts a story co-created by them along with Seth Grahame-Smith (the writer behind “The LEGO Batman Movie). The film is based on characters originally developed by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson. Marc Toberoff, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Tommy Harper, and Burton himself produce, while Sara Desmond, Katterli Frauenfelder, Gough, Millar, Brad Pitt, Larry Wilson, Laurence Senelick, Pete Chiappetta, Andrew Lary, Anthony Tittanegro, Grahame-Smith, and David Katzenberg serve as executive producers.
Haris Zambarloukos, the director of photography for Burton’s projects, is among his long-standing creative collaborators. Their past works together include “Meg 2: The Trench” and “Murder on the Orient Express.” Other frequent associates are production designer Mark Scruton, editor Jay Prychidny, five-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, four-time Oscar-winner Neal Scanlan for creature effects and special makeup FX, and three-time Oscar-nominated composer Danny Elfman. Christine Blundell, an Oscar-winning hair and makeup designer, is also part of Burton’s regular team.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to hit theaters on September 6th.
