The first three episodes of Bel-Air‘s fourth season have significant plot twists for Will Smith’s character, but a particular storyline resolving a past tragedy from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is especially impactful. The third episode, titled “What Are You Doing for Thanksgiving?,” may finally offer redemption for Will’s father figure.
This episode features Will inviting his dad, Lou, to Thanksgiving with the Banks family. This visit appears to be the last we’ll see of Lou in the show, as season 4 is the final season of Bel-Air.
Bringing Will’s father into the Thanksgiving episode is a smart move for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It cleverly combines elements from two earlier episodes, ‘Talking Turkey’ and ‘Papa’s Got a Brand New Excuse,’ into a single, more satisfying story, and gives ‘Papa’s Got a Brand New Excuse’ a happier conclusion.

The new series, Bel-Air, revisited Will’s father’s return with a deeper story than the original Fresh Prince of Bel-Air episode, “Baggage.” This time, however, the show provides a more complete and satisfying resolution to their difficult relationship, giving viewers the happy ending fans have hoped for for over three decades.
The story starts with Lou picking up Will after Will’s court hearing for damaging a car. Will appreciates that his father is there for him, something Lou rarely did during the events of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Because of this, Will invites Lou to join him for Thanksgiving dinner.
The situation quickly becomes reminiscent of an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, specifically the one where Will reconnects with his father. Like that episode, Will and Lou eventually make up and realize their bond over the past year is lasting. Lou even offers Will some fatherly guidance about basketball, which Will accepts, and they end the scene sharing a moment playing the piano together.
Bel-Air’s Lou Ending Still Honors The Fresh Prince Original
Even though Bel-Air gives Lou a positive outcome, his storyline still acknowledges the emotional weight of what is widely considered the most heartbreaking episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. That episode, “What Are You Doing for Thanksgiving?” showcases a particularly strong performance from Will Smith and mirrors the core themes of “Papa’s Got a Brand New Excuse,” specifically Lou’s repeated pattern of leaving Will.
Lou also faces complex and intense conflicts with Aunt Viv and Uncle Phil, similar to those in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but often more prolonged. Additionally, there’s a difficult scene where Lou has to explain to Will that he’s leaving again, this time to go back to Philadelphia.
Lou Returning To Philly In This Way Feels Like The Right Ending For The Character
Even after all these years, watching that scene from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air still breaks my heart. It’s just so painful to see Lou treat his son so coldly, and to witness young Will getting hurt like that. It’s a really tough moment, and it gets to me every single time.
Okay, so Bel-Air definitely takes things in a different direction than the original Fresh Prince. Because of that, how they deal with Will and Lou’s relationship is really interesting. We actually see Lou and Will start to work through things, having some tough but necessary talks in season three. Plus, Lou finally explains why he sent Will away properly – it’s a much more sensitive and thoughtful explanation than we got before.
Beyond that, their connection feels truly real, suggesting a lasting friendship. The moment Lou and Will discuss Will’s future as a father is the heartwarming conclusion fans have been hoping for.
While it’s sad to see Will separated from his father again, this ending is much better than the painful one in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It feels believable that Lou needs to go back to Philadelphia for his job, and it’s nice that he leaves Bel-Air on a happy note.
