Bella Hadid Details Feeling “Disposable” Amid Lyme Disease Battle

Bella Hadid is happy to be back at work.

The supermodel shared how much Lyme disease treatment affected her mental health last year, forcing her to turn down work for nearly a year.

In an interview with Vogue Italy, Bella Hadid explained to her sister, Gigi Hadid, that she became upset because she often felt like she could be easily replaced. She realized she needed to prioritize her well-being and understand that her worth wasn’t tied to the work she accepted. For a long time, she felt she didn’t have the right to turn down any job opportunity.

I realized I needed to let go of worrying about what others think. After building a reputation and showing people who I am, I felt comfortable focusing on work that genuinely matters to me and the people I care about – those I love, trust, and respect.

Bella shared that, in addition to overcoming her worries about seeking treatment for Lyme disease (which she was diagnosed with at age 16 in 2013), she admires Gigi for demonstrating healthy boundaries.

She explained that it’s vital to support not just yourself, but also the people around you. Seeing her friends get inspired is a major source of energy and excitement for her at work.

Bella’s shift in how she approaches work has brought her not only a sense of calm, but also new career paths – she’s now acting in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming show, The Beauty.

You know, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about stepping outside of what feels safe lately. Someone recently really pushed me to do just that, and it forced me to let go of needing everything to be perfect. It’s so easy to get caught up in wanting to look good or have everything just right, but sometimes the best growth comes from releasing that control and embracing the messy parts of life. It’s a reminder that vulnerability can actually be incredibly empowering.

Plus, she was able to channel her physical and mental pain into her character.

Bella explained that she was able to channel her feelings into her art, which she found deeply satisfying. Being able to express herself creatively in this way was incredibly fulfilling for her.
