Good news for horror fans! After years of legal battles between Paramount and Warner Bros. over the rights, it looks like a new Friday the 13th movie might finally be happening. With the two studios planning to merge, there’s fresh hope that Jason Voorhees will return to the big screen.
A24 is launching its new prequel series, Crystal Lake, which will be available to stream on Peacock. The show features Linda Cardellini (known for her roles in Avengers: Age of Ultron and DTF St. Louis) as Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother. It explores the events before a devastating accident at the Crystal Lake summer camp that turned the Voorhees family into killers. Fans have been eager to find out when Crystal Lake would debut on Peacock, and the premiere date has now been announced.
Friday the 13th Prequel Series Gets Perfect Peacock Release Date
The new Crystal Lake series will debut on Peacock on October 15th, right in time for Halloween. This is a great release date for both Peacock and A24, as it’s likely to attract a lot of fans who are looking for a fresh, scary experience from a well-known franchise.
Brad Caleb Kane, the showrunner for Crystal Lake, describes the series as a tense psychological thriller reminiscent of 1970s paranoia. While it shares elements with slasher films, it’s not quite a slasher itself. Expect plenty of bloodshed and creative, shocking deaths, but Kane emphasizes these moments serve to develop the characters, themes, and the story’s setting and time period.
The new series, Crystal Lake, will have eight episodes and be directed by Michael Lennox, Celine Held, Logan George, and Quyen Tran. And good news for fans of Jason Voorhees – this show isn’t the only Friday the 13th project currently being developed.
A Friday the 13th Reboot Film Is Still In The Works

So, a new Friday the 13th movie is definitely in the works, but honestly, it feels like everyone’s throwing ideas at the wall right now to see what sticks. I’m hearing from people in the industry, even folks like Sean Cunningham, who actually created the original, that they’ve all got their own takes they’re trying to pitch to the studio. It’s not just wishful thinking, though – development is genuinely happening, which is good news for fans like me.
Filmmaker Mike P. Nelson, known for Silent Night, Deadly Night, recently told SlashFilm that a project is definitely in the works. He’s been directly informed about it and has even shared his ideas with the team. While he can’t share specifics, he confirmed they contacted him for his input and are now considering his suggestions. The next steps are up to them.
As a huge Friday the 13th fan, I’ll be keeping an eye on ComicBook Horror for all the latest news about the series. And I’d love to hear your thoughts too! Let’s chat about where the franchise should go next over on the ComicBook Forum – come share your ideas!
