For over 75 years, the Peanuts gang – including Charlie Brown and Snoopy – has been a beloved part of television and comic strips worldwide. Now, Sony Pictures and Sony Music Japan are close to taking full control of the Peanuts franchise. They’re finalizing a deal to buy a 41% share from WildBrain, adding to the 39% they already own. Once completed, Sony will own a total of 80% of Peanuts Holdings LLC, while the family of Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz will retain the remaining 20%.
Sony is buying a majority stake in Peanuts Holdings LLC for approximately $630 million Canadian dollars (about $457 million USD). This gives Sony control over the future of the Peanuts franchise, beyond projects already in development with WildBrain. Considering Peanuts is a hugely popular and well-known comic strip with adaptations across all types of media, Sony’s investment could significantly expand the franchise’s reach and impact.
A New Day for Snoopy and Charlie Brown

Shunsuke Muramatsu, head of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan), has stated his company is dedicated to preserving the spirit of Charles Schulz and honoring his family’s wishes. Working with Sony Pictures Entertainment and continuing their partnership with WildBrain, they plan to keep ‘Peanuts’ popular with existing fans while also introducing it to new audiences for many years to come, ensuring the ‘Peanuts’ characters remain cherished by generations.
The Peanuts specials, like A Charlie Brown Christmas and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, are holiday traditions for many people and hold a special place in popular culture. This new agreement gives Sony control over where and how these classic animated shows are streamed. Beyond that, Sony will also be responsible for any future Peanuts adaptations, making this a significant deal.
As a big fan, I’ve been so excited to see Charlie Brown and Snoopy making a comeback with a bunch of new animated shows over the last decade! Just in the last six years, we’ve gotten three different series, and now WildBrain is even working on a full-length movie. What’s really cool is that Sony now has the main creative control, and they’re known for doing amazing work with animated classics and shows for kids. It feels like this could be the start of a whole new wave of Snoopy content – maybe we’ll see more Snoopy and Charlie Brown adventures than ever before! It’s a really exciting time to be a fan, and it all seems to be happening very soon.
