Beloved Disney Fantasy Movie Gets Unexpected, Major Sequel Update That ’70s & ’80s Kids Will Love

As a huge film buff, I always think back to Robert Zemeckis’ Who Framed Roger Rabbit as one of the defining movies of the ’80s. What really blew my mind back then – and still does – is how flawlessly they combined live action with animation. It was such a clever and funny take on those classic detective films! Seeing Roger Rabbit team up with a human detective, Eddie Valiant, to clear his name was brilliant. Critics loved it, audiences flocked to see it – it was a massive hit in 1988. Despite all that success, a sequel never materialized, and Zemeckis himself didn’t think it would happen. But now, it sounds like Toontown might actually have a future again, which is incredibly exciting!

Gary K. Wolf, the author of the novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit? (the inspiration for Who Framed Roger Rabbit), recently told ImNotBad.com that he’s gotten the rights back to his Roger Rabbit stories. He’s now planning new projects, and one of the most promising is an adaptation of his novel Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business. This story will reveal Jessica Rabbit’s origins, showing how she used to be a human named Jessica Krupnik.

According to Wolf, the most advanced project currently is a live-action movie based on the book Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business. It was the first project they began developing. They are also considering a more accurate adaptation of Who Censored Roger Rabbit, aiming to recreate the look and feel of the original with visual elements like speech bubbles and classic characters.

A Jessica Rabbit Spinoff Would Be a Great Idea

Among the many ideas for a Roger Rabbit sequel, Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business stands out as particularly interesting. While Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a tribute to classic film noir, this story would allow filmmakers to create a spy action movie. The plot centers on Jessica Krupnik taking a job at the XERIOUS agency, where she teams up with agent Robbe to stop the villainous Klown. Beyond offering a James Bond-style adventure, XERIOUS Business would also delve into the origins of Toontown, building on the original film while offering a fresh perspective.

What really makes XERIOUS Business promising is its change in genre. This helps avoid repeating ideas from the original Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which is a common problem for sequels to established films. By becoming a spy thriller, the Jessica Rabbit spin-off will feel distinct from the first movie—and not just because it will mostly be live-action. It’s also smart to introduce a new lead character. While Eddie Valiant appears in the sequels to Who Censored Roger Rabbit?, replacing the late Bob Hoskins would be difficult. Hoskins’ performance in the original film was exceptional, and he’s strongly associated with the role.

With the Mission: Impossible series concluded and the James Bond franchise undergoing changes, there’s currently a shortage of thrilling spy movies. While Denis Villeneuve is set to direct the next James Bond film, it won’t be released for several years because he’s currently working on Dune: Part Three. Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business could potentially fill this gap, offering fans a fresh and exciting option while they wait for the future of 007 to unfold.

Even though Who Framed Roger Rabbit came out almost 40 years ago, it’s still beloved by fans, and Jessica Rabbit remains a memorable character. It’s a smart move to center a new film around her and capitalize on her enduring appeal. XERIOUS Business could potentially launch a long-running series, giving an actress a defining role to revisit over time. Sydney Sweeney is looking for something beyond the typical Bond girl role, and leading her own spy film might be a better fit. The filmmakers are committed to quality, ensuring any new movie lives up to the original – it won’t just be made for profit.
