As a huge TV and movie fan, I’m already getting excited for the fall TV season, especially with all the great stuff coming to streaming! Disney+ subscribers are in for a treat – we’re just over a month away from the new Marvel show, Wonder Man. It’s a really cool concept – Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley’s character, Trevor Slattery, are playing actors trying to make it in Hollywood…by starring in a superhero show! Kingsley just shared what Trevor’s been up to since the last movie, and it’s actually a really sweet and touching story.
What Did Ben Kingsley Say About What Trevor’s Been Doing Since Shang-Chi?
Trevor Slattery’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been quite a journey. He first appeared in Iron Man 3 as a struggling actor who was unknowingly hired to pretend to be the villain, The Mandarin. Later, he was both imprisoned for his role and then captured by the actual Mandarin, as shown in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Ben Kingsley, an Academy Award winner, has portrayed the driven but eccentric actor Trevor, and he’s reprising the role in the upcoming series Wonder Man. The trailer released in October hinted at the show’s unique, self-aware storyline. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kingsley discussed what his character did after choosing to remain in the magical world of Ta Lo and continue his friendship with Morris.
He successfully flees both the villainous Mandarin and the fantastical world of Shang-Chi, returning to Hollywood to revive his acting career. He wants to show his supportive mother, Dorothy, that he can fulfill her long-held belief in his talent and become the actor he always dreamed of being. A surprising turn of events puts him in a position where he achieves success, but also faces difficult compromises, leaving him torn between two paths.
It’s surprising to learn that a character with such a chaotic past, like Trevor, actually has a fairly simple and heartwarming reason for doing what he does. The Marvel one-shot, All Hail the King, showed what Trevor was up to in prison after Iron Man 3, and it revealed that he had a close relationship with his mother. She fostered his love of theater when he was young, but sadly passed away in the 1980s while he was trying to make it as an actor in the US.
She wasn’t aware of the dangerous scheme her son was involved in – pretending to be a terrorist to hide other crimes – which is probably a good thing. It’s understandable that Trevor, who loved his mother, would want to succeed as an actor in her honor, since she always believed in him. It seems like his role in Wonder Man might finally give him the success he’s been striving for, but it will likely come with difficult choices and ethical dilemmas he can’t avoid. How things unfold could have serious consequences for both Trevor and Simon.
It’s a lot of complexity for a character who’s only appeared briefly – and this was his first major role in any Marvel movie or series. Fortunately, as Ben Kingsley shared, he was excited to bring Trevor back to delve further into what makes him tick and what happens next.
While working on Shang-Chi, Kevin Feige and director Destin Daniel Cretton mentioned they were considering bringing my character, Trevor, back for a fourth appearance in a new TV series. Even before they had a title, I immediately said yes! I really enjoy playing Trevor – he’s a surprisingly complex character. This series shows Trevor’s life both before and after he became the Mandarin, essentially telling his life story over four episodes.
I’m really curious about this four-episode arc for Trevor in the upcoming biopic, especially since the series promises to be unpredictable, as the actor hinted. However, I’m confused – we know there are actually eight episodes total. Will Trevor only be featured in half of them because his story ends there, or simply because those episodes cover the most important parts of his life? We’ll have to tune in on January 27th to find out.
