Bergerac season 3: Release date speculation and latest news

The popular revival of the 1980s detective series Bergerac is back for a second season on UK&Drama. Damien Molony returns as the detective Jim Bergerac, solving a new murder case set on the beautiful island of Jersey.

UKTV hasn’t announced whether they’ll make another series of the show, but it’s proven popular with viewers. This comes over 30 years after the original series, starring John Nettles, first appeared on television.

As a long-time viewer, I think a lot of us are hoping this new take on Bergerac has the staying power of the original. The clever twist – focusing on a single, complex case for the entire series instead of solving one each episode – is interesting, but will it translate to longevity? The original Bergerac, with John Nettles, ran for an impressive 87 episodes over ten years, and honestly, that’s the kind of run we’re all secretly hoping for with this revival.

So, will there be more episodes? Here are all the updates on a potential Bergerac season 3.

Will there be a third season of Bergerac?

While UKTV hasn’t officially confirmed a third season of Bergerac, the show’s success suggests the detective will probably be back to investigate another case.

The show’s first season, which launched in February 2025, was a major hit on UKTV, achieving some of the network’s highest ratings.

The show also led to a surge in tourism to Jersey. Tricia Warwick, head of Visit Jersey, reported a 70% jump in visitors to the island’s tourism website immediately after the first episode aired.

She explained to BBC News that the first TV series has greatly increased Jersey’s popularity as a place people want to visit.

Damien Molony, the lead actor, shared how much he enjoyed working on the second season, expressing hope he’d return for future installments. He particularly loved filming on location in Jersey, saying, “Any reason to go back to Jersey is great, and it was fantastic that we filmed the second series of Bergerac there. I really enjoy being there.”

The actor is currently very busy with several projects. He’s starring in a new BBC thriller called Two Weeks In August, which will be released later this year, and is currently on stage at the Hampstead Theatre in London, playing physicist Werner Heisenberg in a production of Michael Frayn’s Copenhagen, alongside Richard Schiff and Alex Kingston.

When could a potential Bergerac season 3 be released?

The show’s first season premiered in February 2025, and it was quickly renewed for a second season in April 2025. The second season was filmed in Jersey between August and October of last year and will be available to watch on U&Drama starting April 16th.

If the show gets renewed for a third season, we can likely expect an announcement shortly. If that happens, filming might begin later this year, with the new season possibly premiering in spring 2027.

Who could star in Bergerac season 3?

A third season of Bergerac would feature Damien Molony as the main character, a police officer in Jersey who is now a widower, and Zoe Wanamaker would return as his mother-in-law, Charlie.

Chloe Sweetlove, who plays Jim’s daughter Kim, might be back, as could Robert Gilbert, returning as Barney Crozier, the police officer who often causes Jim trouble.

Each season features familiar faces, with Adrian Edmondson and Lesley Sharp appearing in season two. Fans are still hoping to see John Nettles, the original star of Bergerac, make a guest appearance, though he’s mentioned he feels he’s aged out of the role.

In a 2024 interview with BBC News Jersey, the 82-year-old actor explained he was stepping away from the project, stating he felt too old to continue and didn’t want to hinder the process.

What will happen in Bergerac season 3?

The new Bergerac series is different from the original 1980s show. Instead of solving a new crime each week, each season now focuses on a single, complex case. The reboot also delves deeper into Jim Bergerac’s personal struggles and relationships.

During the first season of the show, Bergerac investigated the death of a rich woman. Now, in the latest season, he’s working to solve a stabbing that happened at an island wedding.

With a new season comes another challenging murder case for the detective. Despite the island’s relatively small population of around 100,000, it seems to be a surprisingly dangerous place to live.

We might also see more happening in Jim’s personal life. He grieved his wife in the first season, but he started dating again in the second, though his first date didn’t go well. It’s unclear whether he’ll find a serious relationship or follow in the footsteps of the original Bergerac and become a bit of a charming, solitary womanizer.

Is there a trailer for Bergerac season 3?

No, not yet. The second season of Bergerac has just been released, and we don’t have confirmation about a third season yet. We’ll share any new information here as soon as we get it.

Watch the season two trailer again to get hyped for what’s coming in season three! We’re hoping it will be a great season.
