Best Atari Game From Each Console Generation

As a lifelong gamer, I’ve always been fascinated by Atari! It all started back in 1972 with a little company that quickly became a giant in the video game world. They had their ups and downs – they were even part of the big crash of ’83 – but they kept making games for years. Today, Warner Bros. owns Atari, but for a long time, the name Atari meant something special to all of us who grew up playing games. I decided to look back at their entire history and pick what I think is the best Atari game from each console they made. I based my choices on what critics said when the games first came out, how important they were for the industry, and, most importantly, how much fun they still are to play!

1st) Pong

1st Gen: Atari Pong

When it comes to the first generation of video game consoles, the winner is clear: Pong. Released in 1972 by Atari, it quickly became a massive hit, inspiring many companies to create their own similar games. Pong was based on the Tennis game from the earlier Magnavox Odyssey, but Atari was the first to make a commercially successful video game out of the concept. They partnered with Sears to sell home consoles that played Pong exclusively, and these sold incredibly well, establishing Atari as the leading video game company in the U.S. While not the very first video game ever made, Pong proved that video games could be a profitable business, and Atari deserves the credit for that.

2nd) Adventure

2nd Gen: Atari 2600 | Atari 5200

The Atari 2600 was the defining console of its time, marking both the beginning and end of Atari’s hardware success – its successor, the Atari 5200, didn’t fare well. With over 500 games available, one stands out as particularly important: Adventure. This groundbreaking title is considered the first true action-adventure and fantasy game, pioneering the exploration and adventure elements we now see everywhere in those genres. It heavily influenced game design for years to come, and it’s famous for hiding one of the very first Easter eggs in video game history.

3rd) Alien Brigade

3rd Gen: Atari 7800

The Atari 7800, while not a hugely popular console, had some standout games, like Alien Brigade. This 1990 rail shooter puts you in the role of a soldier battling aliens who have possessed the bodies of fallen friends. Atari heavily promoted Alien Brigade near the end of the 7800’s run, and it was a hit with those who played it. It’s a really enjoyable game, often compared to Operation Wolf, but unfortunately, the console didn’t sell well, so not many people got to experience it.

4th) Primal Rage

4th Gen: TurboGrafx-16 | Genesis | Neo Geo | Super Nintendo Entertainment System

During the fourth generation of video game consoles, Atari mainly concentrated on the Atari Lynx. However, since this list highlights home consoles, the standout Atari game from that era was Primal Rage. Originally an arcade game, it was later released for consoles like the Sega Genesis, 32X, and Super Nintendo. Primal Rage is a 2D fighting game where prehistoric beasts battle for control of a ruined world. The game was popular, and the version for the Sega Genesis was generally considered the strongest.

5th) Alien vs Predator

5th Gen: Atari Jaguar

The Atari Jaguar marked Atari’s return to home consoles in the mid-1990s, but it couldn’t compete with leading systems. However, the Jaguar did have some strong titles, most notably Alien vs Predator, considered the best game in the Alien vs Predator series. This first-person shooter, developed by Atari, was a major success, selling well and receiving positive reviews. Players can experience the conflict from the perspectives of Colonial Marines, Xenomorphs, and Yautja across interconnected levels. While the Jaguar itself wasn’t a popular console, Alien vs Predator stood out as Atari’s best game of that generation.

6th) Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone

6th Gen: GameCube | Dreamcast | PlayStation 2 | Xbox

After the unsuccessful launch of the Jaguar console, Atari shifted its focus to creating games instead of hardware, though the company was already struggling. They continued to develop titles for different platforms, and their best was arguably Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. This Dungeons & Dragons game boasted a large voice cast and a story penned by R.A. Salvatore. While the action-focused gameplay can get a little repetitive, the game features a compelling story, excellent voice acting, music, graphics, and sound. Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone proved to be an enjoyable experience, but it ultimately became the last original game released under the Atari brand.

7th) Batman: Arkham City

7th Gen: PlayStation 3 | Wii | Xbox 360

Atari faced financial difficulties and changed ownership several times before being bought by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in July 2009, along with Midway Games. Because of this, starting with the 7th generation of consoles, we’ll focus on Warner Bros. games for this list, as Atari is now primarily a classic brand. Warner Bros.’ standout game from that generation is Batman: Arkham City, which is often considered the best Batman game of all time. Its exceptional story, graphics, gameplay, and sound design make it a truly remarkable and highly-rated game.

8th) Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

8th Gen: Nintendo Switch | PlayStation 4 | Wii U | Xbox One

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is a new story taking place in J.R.R. Tolkien’s world of Middle-earth. The game is set between the stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and you play as a Gondorian Ranger on a journey with Celebrimbor. Released on all 8th-generation consoles in 2014, the game received a lot of positive attention from both critics and players, winning several awards. Its popularity led to a sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, which came out in 2017.

9th) LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

9th Gen: Nintendo Switch | PlayStation 5 | Xbox Series X|S

Like previous consoles, the latest generation didn’t have many exclusive games, meaning most titles, including LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, were available on all systems. Of all the games released during this time, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga stands out as a fan favorite. As the title suggests, the game retells the entire Skywalker Saga, covering all nine live-action Star Wars films. Players can experience the stories in any order they choose, and it offers the classic, enjoyable LEGO gameplay with fun mechanics, memorable characters, and a wonderfully immersive world to explore.

10th) Hogwarts Legacy

10th Gen: Nintendo Switch 2 | PlayStation 6 | Xbox Project Helix

It’s unclear exactly when the next generation of consoles will officially start – or if it already has. Some people in the gaming industry think the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 could mark the beginning, and if that’s the case, Hogwarts Legacy is currently the best game released for it. While Hogwarts Legacy originally came out during the previous console generation, it runs exceptionally well on the Switch 2. However, Warner Bros. Games will likely release even better games in the future, and we can only imagine what amazing titles will appear when Sony and Microsoft release their next-generation consoles.
