Currently, we’re deeply immersed in the seventeenth series of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and our beloved character Frank Reynolds has already pulled off a hilarious practical joke on the rest of the gang, centering around cake. In fact, an episode unfolded where he squared off against one of “Sunny”‘s most memorable supporting characters, The Lawyer. It’s truly astounding how Danny DeVito manages to captivate a scene with just a single, perfectly timed line delivery. You can sense the cast’s genuine affection for him mirroring the audience’s fondness for Frank, regardless of his increasingly reprehensible and unsavory behavior. For enthusiasts who believe Frank is the show’s finest character, these forthcoming episodes serve as compelling evidence to support their claim.
1) “Dennis and Dee Get a New Dad” (Season 2, Episode 10)
In “Dennis and Dee Get a New Dad,” although Dennis Reynolds and Deandra Reynolds are the main characters as indicated by their names, the episode primarily focuses on Frank. This emphasis is largely due to a pivotal scene.
In the lively atmosphere of Guigino’s, I share with Dennis, Dee, and Frank a shocking revelation: Bruce Mathis is actually our father. However, Frank’s reaction catches everyone off guard. He storms through the crowd, angrily questioning strangers about whether they had ever been intimate with “my wife.” His outburst of “someone needs to get stabbed” while holding a butter knife adds to the tension, and ultimately, he collapses in a fit of rage.
2) “The Gang Gets Invincible” (Season 3, Episode 2)
In Season 5, Frank’s behavior took a turn for the worse and reached its peak, which is the focus of our next point. While he displayed unpleasant traits from Seasons 2 through 4, he hadn’t yet transformed into the monstrous character he became later on.
Instead, he occasionally indulged excessively. A prime example occurred before Season 5, particularly in “The Gang Gets Invincible” from Season 3 – an entertaining and enjoyable early episode of Sunny. Here we are introduced to Charlie’s Green Man and the whole McPoyle family. Frank also takes an overdose of acid, believing he is confined in the McPoyle’s camper’s bathroom. However, it turns out that he was merely standing in a trash can, mistakenly thinking that Charlie in the Green Man costume was a talking lizard.
3) “The Gang Gives Frank an Intervention” (Season 5, Episode 4)
In “The Gang’s Intervention for Frank,” one of the most hilarious moments occurs when Frank, stumbling drunkenly on a suburban street, is surprised by Mac who had been secretly following him. Some viewers might even argue that this particular episode is the series’ finest overall.
The episode initiates with Frank announcing to the group (including us viewers) his intention to voluntarily delve into a world of debauchery. Within just the first five minutes, he manages to convince the group that a funeral is essentially a park celebration, then proceeds to light up a joint at this supposedly solemn event, followed by an attempt to seek revenge with the bereaved widow.
4) “The Gang Wrestles for the Troops” (Season 5, Episode 7)
As he enters his later years, Frank expresses a desire to join the group once more. When they plan to stage a wrestling event to demonstrate their national pride, he yearns to participate as a wrestler himself. However, they assign him the role of the referee instead.
Instead of Frank creating a new character, he’s already got one prepared – The Trash Man. His antics are quite amusing, such as when he struggles to swallow an apple, which humorously showcases the charm of The Trash Man. Similarly, his action of hurling a trashcan at “Rickety” Cricket, causing injury, followed by raising his arms triumphantly and flashing a wide grin, is equally entertaining. Long live The Trash Man!
5) “Frank’s Pretty Woman” (Season 7, Episode 1)
It’s challenging to determine if Frank truly loved Barbara, or if he merely felt trapped with her due to his belief that Dee and Dennis were his children. It’s more likely that he didn’t. Frank’s actions suggest he may have loved Roxy, the prostitute who required help removing crack rocks from her backside, but even then, the term “love” might be overstating it.
However, it’s consistent with his character by Season 7 that he proposes to Roxy, who appears to carry a high risk of STDs into marriage. Similarly, it aligns with his personality to find Charlie’s secret date plan appealing. To elaborate, the woman believes Charlie is her wealthy date, unaware that he intends to pretend to be ill and leave her on a date with their limo driver instead. In no conceivable world would this scheme succeed, but Frank remains optimistic about it and looks forward to it.
6) “Frank Reynolds’ Little Beauties” (Season 7, Episode 3)
Sunny boasts some fantastic opening scenes. Among the top ones are “Sweet Dee Gets Audited” and “Mac’s Mom Burns Her House Down,” with “Frank Reynolds’ Little Beauties” equally impressive.
Frank rushes into Paddy’s Pub, tripping and landing on the ground. He then admits he had thrown money into a child beauty pageant, which turns out to be a problem because his partner made advances towards one of the contestants. The group is puzzled since a child beauty pageant seems like something Frank would enjoy. However, when they introduce the contestants, they’re all children. This sets the stage for Frank to make a mess, and as he attempts to justify the contest, his explanations become more ridiculous and laughable.
7) “The Gang Gets Analyzed” (Season 8, Episode 5)
Everyone Shines in ‘The Gang’s Examination'”
Mac nibbles on a pencil, Charlie lugs around a lifeless pigeon, Dee attempts a poor rendition of ‘Good Will Hunting’, and Dennis feigns expertise as a therapist with limited knowledge of the field. However, this episode is predominantly about Frank.
“Everyone’s Moment in ‘The Gang Under Scrutiny'”
Mac bites on his pencil, Charlie carries a dead pigeon, Dee struggles with her ‘Good Will Hunting’ impression, and Dennis acts like a therapist without much understanding of the job. But it’s mostly Frank who steals the show in this episode.
In this episode, I uncover the tale of “The Frog Kid,” a term I’d come to understand differently as the story unfolds in another episode. Becoming “The Frog Kid” was his unique way of making friends and dealing with the ordeal of being sent off to the ridiculously named school they call “nitwit.” It was there that he earned his certificate, proving he’s no simpleton, a fact we learn later on but it all starts here in this episode, laying the groundwork for more tales about our character, Frank.
8) “Frank Falls Out the Window” (Season 11, Episode 2)
In the scene titled “Frank Falls Out the Window,” a moment stands out where Frank claims his head is okay, only to turn around revealing a gruesome, bloodstained wound on his shaven pate. This instant is a perfect example of something being both incredibly effective and nauseatingly grotesque. It’s simply superb!
In this episode, Frank follows the title’s suggestion literally by falling out of the window shared with Charlie. Consequently, due to a severe concussion, he believes it’s 2006 again, the year he joined the group. The gang then attempts to manipulate history, primarily to obtain Frank’s money (or prevent him from sleeping with the two strippers, as requested by Charlie and Mac). However, history proves to be a repeating cycle, with Dennis and Dee not receiving his money, just like in previous instances, while Charlie and Mac are left outside Frank and Charlie’s apartment, reminiscent of past events involving the two strippers.
9) “Being Frank” (Season 11, Episode 6)
As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but recommend “Being Frank” from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Although it might not rank among their absolute finest episodes, this one is a must-watch for fans of the eccentric Frank. The perspective shifts to Frank’s unique viewpoint throughout the episode, offering a rare glimpse into his world. By the end, we get a tantalizing taste of what Night Crawlers is all about – a moment that’s been long awaited by many viewers.
In this episode, we catch a glimpse of Frank’s perception of his place within the group, which seems more like tagging along rather than actively participating. Often, he’s clueless about the group’s strategy, barely understanding their plans more than half the time. It’s not that he struggles to follow, but rather, he often doesn’t participate at all. Yet, surprisingly enough, things manage to fall into place for him occasionally.
10) “Frank vs. Russia” (Season 16, Episode 4)
Throughout its entirety, Season 16 demonstrated that “It’s Always Sunny” continued to thrive, offering numerous top-notch episodes. For enthusiasts of the character Frank, there were standout episodes such as “Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang” and “Frank vs. Russia.
This entry serves as an approval for both titles, “Frank vs. Russia” was chosen due to the enticing image, but “Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang” offers a deeper look at the character. In “Frank vs. Russia”, we observe DeVito’s energetic portrayal of Frank as he engages in various antics, such as Dennis and Dee planning an unusual day out for him that includes loitering under a bridge and relieving himself on a fire hydrant. On the other hand, “Frank vs. Russia” highlights how DeVito remains fully immersed in Sunny, even at 80 years old.
