Update #2 [Mon 13th Apr 2026, 8:15pm]:
Bethesda is addressing reports of Starfield crashing for some players on PS5 and plans to release a fix by the end of the week.
They’ve found a few key issues and are working on a quick fix to release this week.
We’re seeing widespread reports on Reddit and other social media platforms that Sony is issuing refunds for Starfield on PlayStation 5.
If players contact PlayStation support, they’re often able to get a refund, but it’s not always approved. Unlike the widespread refunds offered for Cyberpunk 2077, some refund requests are currently being denied for reasons that aren’t always clear.
Honestly, it’s kinda crazy how many people are running into problems with Starfield. Like, a lot of us were excited to jump in over the weekend and really get into the game, but a bunch of us kept hitting crashes. It just shows how widespread these issues really are.
Regarding Cyberpunk 2077, the PlayStation 5’s crash reporting system probably heavily influenced the game’s refund process. The constant stream of error reports served as evidence of significant problems with the game.
It’s likely Starfield will be the same – we’ve already sent in over 20 bug reports after just 15 hours of playing.
Right now, everyone is looking to Bethesda for answers. While not all players are experiencing crashes, it’s obvious a fix is needed. Starfield has been available for almost a week, and the developers haven’t yet addressed the issue.
Ugh, I’m hearing from a lot of people that Starfield keeps crashing on PS5 and the new PS5 Pro! It’s super frustrating, and honestly, nobody seems to know what’s causing it yet. Hopefully, they figure it out soon because it’s really ruining the experience for some of us.
Before getting into specifics, it’s important to mention that this problem doesn’t seem to affect everyone. During our testing for the Starfield PS5 review, we didn’t experience any major issues.
More and more players are reporting frequent crashes with the game on Reddit, especially now that it’s been out for its first weekend on PlayStation.
It’s concerning because we’re now running into these crashes ourselves. This player started the game on Friday and repeatedly crashed while exploring one of the main cities.
We did some testing and found that the game crashes seem to be related to your graphics settings. On the PlayStation 5 Pro, we tested all the different visual modes – Visuals, Enhanced, and Performance – with the frame rate unlocked, and we consistently experienced crashes in each one.
The game only ran smoothly in the city when we limited the frame rate to 60. But when we explored the wilderness, it kept crashing.
We fixed the problem by turning off the PS5 Pro’s enhanced upscaling feature, PSSR 2, in the display settings. Since then, we haven’t experienced any crashes while playing Starfield for several hours.
We’ve noticed this issue ourselves, but it seems to be widespread. People on Reddit have tried many different solutions, but none of them have worked so far.
Of course, turning off PSSR 2 doesn’t fix the crashes that happen when playing the sci-fi RPG on the standard console hardware.
In short, there’s something very wrong with Starfield right now.
Even the experts at Digital Foundry have experienced frustrating crashes while playing Starfield. In their technical review, they noted that the PlayStation 5 and the upcoming PS5 Pro crashed fairly often during testing – a problem that wasn’t present in the initial Xbox Series X/S release. These crashes completely freeze the game, forcing players to hard reset their console. Digital Foundry saw this happen in various settings and modes, meaning there’s no clear fix or workaround at this time.
Hopefully, Bethesda will fix the issues with Starfield quickly. The game came out on PlayStation 5 on April 7th, and it still hasn’t been updated since then.
Bethesda is notorious for releasing video games with significant bugs, but it’s especially surprising to see Starfield, after nearly three years since its initial release on Xbox and PC, still plagued by crashes on the PS5. It’s truly unbelievable.
