Eugene Levy is a well-known comedic actor, but when he began working with his son, Dan Levy, on the sitcom Schitt’s Creek, many viewers weren’t yet familiar with Dan’s work, leading to some uncertainty. It quickly became clear that talent ran in the family, as the show became a huge success with both critics and streaming audiences. Over its six seasons, Schitt’s Creek received numerous award nominations and ultimately won nine Emmys in its final season, including top prizes for Outstanding Comedy Series and all four acting categories. In fact, the show made Emmy history by winning all seven major comedy awards – and two more on top of that!
It’s no surprise expectations are high for Dan Levy’s follow-up to Schitt’s Creek, and now we have a first look with the trailer for his new series. Instead of simply recreating the success of his previous show, Levy is taking on a more ambitious project. Big Mistakes follows two siblings (Levy and Taylor Ortega) who unexpectedly find themselves involved in organized crime. You can watch the trailer below, released by Netflix.
I’m always excited when the people behind shows I love take on new projects. While Schitt’s Creek was full of amazing comedic talent, this new film, Big Mistakes, boasts a really strong cast – Laurie Metcalf, Abby Quinn, Boran Kuzum, Jack Innanen, and Elizabeth Perkins are all in it. It’s been a tough year for Schitt’s Creek fans with the loss of Catherine O’Hara, so hearing about anything new from the Levys is a real bright spot and something I’m definitely looking forward to.
With so many popular sitcoms getting revived or expanded with sequels and reunions, Schitt’s Creek seemed to end at just the right time, giving fans everything they hoped for. Dan Levy has talked about the possibility of continuing the show, but he acknowledges that the original series was so well-loved that any attempt to recapture that success – especially alongside Eugene Levy and Annie Murphy – would face incredibly high expectations. He told E! Online in 2023:
It’s great that people are eager for something new, but any new idea really needs to be better than what we’ve already achieved – and that’s a high bar. So, I’m open to possibilities, but I haven’t found that next big thing yet.
“But if it means people go back and watch the show from the beginning, not a bad thing.”
Now that O’Hara has passed away, it seems unlikely we’ll see any more stories set in the world she created. She was an incredibly talented actress, recently honored with a posthumous award for her comedic performance at the Actor Awards, highlighting just how much she will be missed.
