Bijou Phillips Hospitalized Amid Need for Kidney Transplant

Bijou Phillips is facing a scary health battle.

According to her representative, the 45-year-old is currently in the hospital receiving care at UCLA Health. She is undergoing dialysis and needs another kidney transplant.

Bijou, the mother of 11-year-old Fianna with her ex-husband Danny Masterson, recently announced on social media that she needs a kidney donor.

She explained she was speaking not just for herself, but also as someone who cares deeply – as a friend, sister, and aunt – and, above all, as a mom to a wonderful and courageous daughter.

The model also revealed details about her health, explaining that she was born with kidneys that hadn’t fully developed. As a baby, she spent three months in the newborn intensive care unit receiving dialysis.

In 2017, a dear friend gave me the life-changing gift of a kidney. That transplant allowed me to be a mother to my daughter for eight wonderful years. However, I’ve faced several health challenges since, including a BK virus infection that caused my body to reject the new kidney both at a cellular and antibody level.

Bijou revealed the name of her doctor, Dr. Anjay Rastogi, and also provided details on how people can become organ donors.

Knowing that time is critical, she expressed gratitude for the support she’s received and asked for help finding a living donor, hoping to spend more time with her loved ones.

The message included two photos of Bijou and Fianna: one of newborn Fianna sleeping on her mother’s chest, and another of them sharing a loving kiss when Fianna was older.

Bijou Phillips usually doesn’t share much of her daughter on social media, but in October she took a significant step: she legally petitioned to change her daughter Fianna’s last name from Masterson to Phillips.

TopMob News obtained a copy of the petition while Danny is serving a 30-year to life sentence for two rape convictions he received in 2023. Bijou filed for divorce from the That ‘70s Show star in the same year.

A year after the event, she told TopMob News she was doing well, adding that she and Fianna worked together wonderfully as a team.

While Bijou searches for a kidney donor so she and Fianna can stay together, here’s a look at other celebrities who have openly discussed their health struggles.

Nikki Bella, known from Total Bellas, shared that one of her breast implants moved after being hit in the chest during a wrestling match with Piper Niven in July 2025.

She reassured her sister, Bella Garcia, saying they would get the issue resolved eventually. She explained to the doctor that as soon as she finished her current commitments – hinting at retirement – she’d return to address the problem and ensure everything looked its best, because she planned to use them again and they couldn’t appear in their current condition.

Lupita Nyong’o, known for her role in 12 Years a Slave, received a diagnosis of uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus—in 2014, the same year she won an Academy Award for her performance in the film.

She didn’t reveal her diagnosis until 2025, when she shared on Instagram that she had been privately struggling with it for over ten years.

She explained that growing up, many girls are told that periods are supposed to be painful, and that pain is just something women have to deal with. This leaves many of us feeling like we’re going through a difficult experience all by ourselves.

In July 2025, the actress from Daisy Jones & The Six revealed she’d been hospitalized for a hernia. This happened because she’d been wearing pants that were too tight, which caused a gap in her abdominal muscles.

Someone messaged Suki on X (formerly Twitter) asking why she hadn’t tweeted recently. Suki jokingly replied, explaining she’d been secretly dealing with a hernia caused by wearing very tight pants six months prior and hadn’t wanted to share.

Adam Devine revealed that injuries from a childhood accident – he was hit by a cement truck when he was 11 – continue to bother him now.

“It’s been a really difficult time,” Devine shared on the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast in 2025. “I’ve been experiencing spasms all over my body, and doctors recently told me I was in a life-threatening situation—I was told I was dying within the last year.”

I’ve been thinking a lot about pain lately, and it’s just something that comes and goes, you know? It’s like, my body has its quirks – a few things aren’t quite right, a little off, but that’s just how it is. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine, and I’m learning to live with it.

A former contestant on The Bachelor went to the hospital because of severe back pain. He said he was in so much pain he could barely move and had to crawl on his hands and knees after the pain worsened during a road trip with a friend.

He described a strange tingling sensation that still lingered in his knees and toes as of a March 2025 podcast episode of Trading Secrets. He explained that just two or three weeks prior, he’d been squatting nearly 300 pounds, but now he couldn’t even do a squat, or stand on one leg without falling. He said it felt like he’d had a stroke.

But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, “We’re on the mend.”

In February 2025, the former Even Stevens star revealed she was shot in the face during a birthday celebration for her husband, Brendan Rooney. They were on a trip to go clay pigeon shooting when the incident occurred.

In an Instagram post, she explained that she was accidentally shot in the face by someone at a party who fired a gun unsafely. Thankfully, @thebrendanrooney quickly helped, checked her over, and drove her to the hospital. She was hit five times, and one bullet came dangerously close to her right eye – less than an inch away.

The Kim Possible actress explained that a small piece of something got stuck behind her eye. Doctors have advised against removing it with surgery right now, but they will keep a close watch on her condition, as her vision is currently normal.

The actress expressed immense gratitude for surviving. She shared her deep love for her daughters, husband, family, and friends, explaining that she’d had a moment where she truly realized how precious life is. She urged everyone to cherish their loved ones and hug them often, because things can change so quickly.

I’m such a fan of Amy Schumer, and I was so impressed by how she handled everything! It’s amazing how the internet, which can be so negative, actually helped her figure out what was going on with her health. She was doing press and people started commenting on her face looking ‘puffy,’ and she initially just brushed it off. But then, doctors actually started leaving comments, genuinely concerned that she might have Cushing syndrome – something about her face made them think her cortisol levels were off or she’d had a reaction to steroid injections. Can you imagine being ‘trolled’ by doctors?! It made her realize she had been getting steroid injections after her breast reduction and C-section. She said she never would have known about the Cushing syndrome if people hadn’t pointed it out online. Now, she’s just so grateful it’s a type that will resolve on its own and that she’s healthy. Hearing her share that news in her newsletter was such a relief – the greatest news imaginable, she said, and I totally agree!

During a game in December 2024, an AHL player was accidentally cut in the face by another player’s skate and needed 25 stitches. After his son fully recovered, New Jersey Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald told ESPN how grateful they were, saying, “We feel very lucky, and I wouldn’t want any parent to go through that.”

In March 2022, Hailey Bieber experienced a frightening health scare while having breakfast with her husband, Justin Bieber. She suddenly started having stroke-like symptoms, struggling to speak and noticing her face drooping. Though these symptoms eventually passed, she went to the hospital for testing. Doctors discovered she had a small blood clot in her brain, which they identified as a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack). Further investigation at UCLA revealed Hailey had a hole in her heart, called a patent foramen ovale (PFO). This hole allowed the blood clot to travel to her brain, causing the TIA. Hailey has since undergone a successful procedure to close the PFO and is now feeling well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a condition that temporarily paralyzed parts of his face and forced him to cancel the rest of his tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained the virus affected nerves in his ear and face, causing paralysis on one side. He showed fans that he couldn’t blink, smile, or move his nostril on the affected side, and that it was becoming increasingly difficult to eat. Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away.

Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well, saying he was feeling much better. She described the situation as scary and unexpected, but expressed gratitude that he was going to be okay.

Jamie Foxx recently shared details about the serious health scare he experienced in April 2023, which he had initially kept private. He explained that while in Atlanta, he suffered a severe headache and asked for aspirin, but then lost consciousness. He doesn’t remember the next twenty days.

Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, was worried and took him to the hospital. There, they discovered he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke.

After surgery, Jamie woke up in a wheelchair on May 4th, unable to walk. He then went to Chicago for rehabilitation and therapy. He expressed deep gratitude for the prayers he received, saying he needed every single one.

The reality TV star shared that she temporarily stopped breathing while running in the first challenge of the NBC competition show.

She shared on the show Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser that her memory of the event was fragmented. She recalled hearing a helicopter, feeling like she was floating, and then seeing her grandfather. After that, she remembered only darkness, followed by light, leading her to realize she had died that day.

She explained that her organs were failing and she hadn’t known she had rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the body essentially starts to shut down.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, revealed in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker that she nearly died from two brain aneurysms. While filming the show, she experienced a severe headache while at the gym, followed by intense pain and vomiting. She quickly realized something was seriously wrong, as she suspected brain damage.

A hospital scan revealed a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a life-threatening stroke caused by bleeding around the brain. She immediately underwent surgery to repair a ruptured aneurysm, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she experienced aphasia, making it difficult to speak coherently.

Although she recovered and was discharged after a month, a scan in 2013 revealed the aneurysm had doubled in size, requiring a second, more invasive surgery. This time, doctors had to access her brain directly through her skull. The procedure initially failed and caused a significant bleed, putting her life at risk. Thankfully, Emilia has since made a full recovery and is now completely healthy.

Cori Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s daughter, recently shared her gratitude for her family’s support after she experienced a stroke in January 2024. She told TopMob News that she immediately texted her family with a picture after it happened, and they all rushed to be with her. While she could have gone home after the stroke, existing health issues, including lupus and kidney problems, required a longer hospital stay. Cori is now recovering well, stating she’s “doing great” and has been working to regain some motor skills. She’s thankful for her family’s quick response and support during a difficult time.

Shailene Woodley struggled with significant health issues throughout her 20s. In a September 2024 podcast interview, she described a time when she was losing her hearing, couldn’t walk for more than a few minutes without needing to rest for hours, and experienced constant stomach pain. She faced confusion due to conflicting diagnoses from different doctors.

Determined to find answers, Woodley, who prefers to keep her specific condition private, combined traditional medical care with holistic and herbal remedies. This search for well-being lasted for a decade.

She explained that the physical discomfort led to deeper issues, including fear of food and struggles with body image, identity, and feeling comfortable in her own body.

Fortunately, after years of focusing on both her physical and mental health, Woodley is now feeling much better and considers herself very healthy. She expressed happiness and relief at having resolved the issues.
