What’s the view from your sofa?
Kristin Bailey, my spouse, and I possess an antique daybed we acquired during our travels in Indonesia. In this region, day beds are customary, and we were particularly captivated by this piece. We’ve installed a television on the wall, which we primarily use for movie nights or to catch shows that truly pique our interest. We take great care in arranging ourselves with cushions, as viewing becomes quite an event. No snacks are permitted – no crumbs in the bed! However, a subtle bowl of peanuts might be allowed.
What have you been watching while reclining on your day bed recently?
As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for sci-fi, I found Severance to be ingeniously crafted, filled with witty humor that’s as dark as it is delightful. The adaptation of the Silo books was nothing short of exceptional, with Rebecca Ferguson delivering an outstanding performance. Among all Star Wars spin-offs, Andor stands out as my favorite. It’s visually captivating and keeps you on the edge of your seat with its exhilarating storyline.
In the final episode of the crime series “My Life Is Murder,” your character was a courier. If you were to create a plot for killing someone in this context, how would you do it?

You won Strictly Come Dancing in 2020. Are you still busting moves?
I’ve had a lifelong passion for dancing, and whenever there’s an opportunity to dance, especially at events, I jump right in with enthusiasm, though I must admit I often wing it without knowing the proper steps. Learning those steps, however, makes it all the more wonderful. It’s a talent I cherish and aim to keep sharp. In my performances, you might catch me doing a bit of the Charleston or Paso Doble. Strictly Challenge pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it was an excellent way to boost my confidence. Dancing is just such a delightful experience for me.
I read that you can play 63 musical instruments. Is that number accurate?
It seems someone has figured out a solution, yet since that number was drawn arbitrarily from thin air, it continues to grow. In my spare time, I’ve taught myself to play the bagpipes and I’m currently mastering the trombone, nyckelharpa (a Swedish bowed instrument), and aerophone, which resembles a synthesized clarinet. During my performances, I prefer to showcase traditional instruments such as the oud and saz, but I also like to incorporate modern technology, such as an electronic hurdy-gurdy.
What makes you happy?
I really enjoy taking walks. Recently, I had the pleasure of exploring the South Downs Way, which spans approximately 100 miles. This year marks my 60th birthday, and when my wife asked me what I wanted to do for it, I decided to plan a big hike with some friends and family. We expect around 30-40 people will join us for this celebration. To make things even more exciting, we’ve arranged camping sites along the route, which is something I really enjoy. I guess you could say I’m a bit of an adrenaline seeker. A few years ago, when my son Dax was around 13 or 14, we went skydiving together – it was absolutely thrilling!
In your new live show, Thoughtifier, you talk about your belief that AI won’t replace humans. Why?
AI poses a tangible risk to specific roles such as data processing and film/TV editing, but it lacks the creative flair that humans possess. I’m confident that AI won’t supplant human creativity – that’s what keeps my optimism alive.
What does it mean for the future?
I believe that live performances will take on a deeper level of authenticity, making them even more valuable, because of this. Additionally, humans have an ancient need to experience things collectively. I went into the Abba Voyage show with doubts, but it turned out to be fantastic. The music is performed live by an exceptional band, which gives it a sense of warmth and urgency. It’s almost like a blended live show. For my next performance, I plan to have myself in my conservatory while a younger, virtual version of me performs on stage.

My Life Is Murder airs Tuesdays at 9pm on U&Alibi – catch up on Now.
