Markets

What to know, dear reader:
- Ah, Bitcoin, that fickle darling of the digital realm, has tumbled below $80,000, as if it heard the whispers of U.S. airstrikes in Iran and decided to join the melodrama. Oil prices surged, and the crypto markets, ever the dramatic troupe, followed suit with a risk-off performance.
- Crypto traders, those masters of leverage, unwound their positions with the grace of a swan-or perhaps a drowning duck. Futures open interest fell 1.5%, liquidating nearly $300 million, and options flow shifted toward protective BTC puts, as if one could truly protect oneself from the whims of the market.
- Amidst this chaos, DeFi tokens outperformed, with ONDO leaping over 8% following a cross-border U.S. Treasury redemption involving JPMorgan, Mastercard, and Ripple. Ah, the sweet irony of traditional finance bolstering the decentralized world.
Bitcoin, that digital phoenix, tumbled back below $80,000 late Thursday, as the U.S. launched fresh airstrikes in Iran. Brent crude oil briefly topped $100 per barrel, only to retreat like a shy debutante at a ball. The crypto market, already jittery after Michael Saylor’s volte-face on selling Bitcoin, reacted with all the subtlety of a Wildean wit.
Ether (ETH), that stalwart companion, trades at $2,280, having lost a mere 0.2% since midnight UTC. Altcoins like Monero (XMR) and Dash (DASH) shed 4% to 5%, as if they were shedding last season’s fashions. The broader crypto recovery, however, remains intact, though a drop below $75,000 would signal a reversion to the previous trading range-a tragic fall from grace.
Derivatives positioning
- The crypto futures market has cooled for the second straight day, with cumulative industry notional open interest down over 1.5% at $131.5 billion. Trading volume, too, has fallen by 12% to $191 billion. Investors, it seems, are deleveraging with the fervor of a Puritan at a masquerade ball.
- Exchanges have liquidated nearly $300 million in bets in 24 hours, with longs bearing the brunt of the losses. Ah, the folly of those who dared to dream of continued price rises! The market, ever the cruel mistress, had other plans.
- Open interest (OI) has declined in most major tokens, including Bitcoin and Ether. Meme token DOGE‘s OI dropped by over 4%, the most among the top 10 coins. TON, however, stands out with a 6% rise in OI-a lone star in a fading constellation.
- For the second straight day, OI-adjusted cumulative volume delta for most majors remains negative, a sign of traders aggressively shorting using market orders. How very unsubtle of them.
- On Deribit, the most actively traded contract was a BTC $105,000 call option expiring June 26. Market positioning has shifted, with put options at $80,000, $75,000, and $60,000 strikes now among the top five. A clear change from the previous sessions, when calls dominated-hope, it seems, has given way to caution.
- Bitcoin’s annualized 30-day implied volatility index, BVIV, remains near 40%, the lowest since late January. A sign of market calm, perhaps, or merely the quiet before the storm of the U.S. nonfarm payrolls report.
Token talk
- Despite relative weakness across crypto majors and privacy coins, CoinDesk’s DeFi Select Index (DFX) surged by more than 3%, buoyed by ONDO’s 8.2% gain. Ondo Finance, that real-world asset (RWA) project, completed its first cross-border cross-bank redemption of U.S. treasuries, working with JPMorgan, Mastercard, and Ripple. How delightfully ironic.
- The CoinDesk Memecoin Select Index (CDMEME) lost ground, posting a 0.1% swing to the downside. The only benchmark in the red-a tragicomic footnote in today’s drama.
- CoinMarketCap’s “altcoin season” indicator stands at 42/100, significantly higher than April’s low of 31/100. The total market cap of altcoins has risen from below $1 trillion to $1.05 trillion. A modest recovery, but one must take one’s victories where one can.
