Sky will be broadcasting a new Sherlock Holmes series called ‘The Death of Sherlock Holmes,’ featuring Rafe Spall – known from ‘Black Mirror’ and ‘Under Salt Marsh’ – in the lead role as the famous detective.
Currently in production, the drama series is created by Claudia Bluemhuber (known for Fallen), André Küttel (Platzspitzbaby), and Pierre Monnard (Winter Palace). Küttel and Simone Schmid are responsible for writing the episodes.
So far, Deleila Piasko, known for her role in ‘Transatlantic,’ is the only other actor confirmed to be in the series. She will play a character living in the Swiss Alps, and her character will cross paths with Sherlock Holmes after he seemingly falls to his death at Reichenbach Falls.
This show, a collaboration between Switzerland, Germany, and Belgium, explores what happened to Sherlock Holmes after he seemingly fell to his death in 1891, battling Professor Moriarty, and before he reappeared in 1894. It bridges the gap in his story during those missing years.

This upcoming series, scheduled for release in 2027, is set in the stunning but harsh Swiss Alps. It tells the story of an Englishman discovered nearly frozen in a mountain stream by a local woman named Alma and her son, Franz. After the village doctor is found murdered, suspicion falls on Franz, and the stranger, who has no memory of his past, becomes the boy’s only protector.
The man has no memory, but moments of brilliant insight suggest a forgotten history. As pieces of his past resurface, he’s forced to ask himself a disturbing question: what is his true identity? What begins as a simple mystery in the Alps quickly expands into a large-scale conspiracy, leading him closer to uncovering his past – and a famous name he might have once known.
Jonathan Ford, from distribution company Sphere Abacus, announced that audiences still love Sherlock Holmes. He believes this new film, made by Silver Reel, will be popular with viewers globally, as it tells a previously unknown story from a crucial time in Holmes’s life.

Katie Keenan, Sky’s director of acquisitions, also expressed her enthusiasm for the project, saying they’re thrilled to be involved in this fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes story. She highlighted the return of Rafe Spall to Sky as a key element of the show.
We’re continuing our work with Sphere Abacus later this year with the release of the new mystery thriller, Yaga. Plus, we’re excited to announce that The Death of Sherlock Holmes will be part of the second season of Heated Rivalry, which is already generating a lot of buzz, and is planned for release in 2027.
Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t the only actor to portray Sherlock Holmes! Many have taken on the role over the years, including Robert Carlyle and Hero Fiennes Tiffin in recent adaptations. And Henry Cavill will be returning as Holmes in the upcoming movie, Enola Holmes 3.
