The horror genre has had a strong start to 2026 with the release of Primate and the upcoming 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The rest of the year looks just as exciting! January will also bring Return to Silent Hill and a new film from Sam Raimi, Send Help. Throughout the year, audiences can expect sequels like The Strangers – Chapter 3, Scream 7, and Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, as well as remakes like Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! and adaptations of popular horror games, including The Backrooms.
Horror fans have been waiting for a good scare, and it looks like one is finally coming! The first trailer for the new Mummy remake is here, and it’s generating a lot of excitement. Directed by Lee Cronin, who recently made Evil Dead Rise, and produced by James Wan, this Mummy looks very different from previous films – and that’s a good thing! It’s been a long wait, but the first glimpse of the movie is finally here.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Trailer Offers First Look at Creepy 2026 Horror
The new Mummy film, directed by Lee Cronin, seems to be taking a much scarier approach than the 2016 version starring Tom Cruise. The trailer relies on quick, unsettling images to build suspense and mystery. What sets this Mummy apart is its focus on body horror – the trailer shows disturbing scenes like bugs crawling from mouths, mummified remains, and open wounds. It’s too early to say how the full movie will be, but the teaser trailer has already created a lot of excitement.
Early reports about Lee Cronin’s The Mummy suggested the story centers on a man (Jack Reynor, from Midsommar) whose daughter reappears after being missing for ten years, but she’s now possessed by an ancient Egyptian mummy. The film’s promotional materials and the tagline “What happened to Katie?” seem to confirm this is indeed the plot.
However, earlier reports suggested the new movie wouldn’t be called “The Mummy,” and that Universal Pictures was hoping to revive the original franchise with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in a fourth installment. Now that the trailer is out and the film is officially titled Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, it’s clear those rumors were false. Adding a director’s name to a movie title is a common way to avoid legal issues with other studios. A well-known example is Lee Daniels’ The Butler from 2013, which needed the director’s name added to the title to prevent a lawsuit with Warner Bros., who owned a 1916 silent film with the same name.
Though Lee Cronin’s The Mummy opens in theaters on April 17th with no other big releases that same weekend, it will still compete with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which comes out earlier in April, and a Michael Jackson biopic arriving the following week.
